Creature Keeper

I wanted to finish the game first before posting, but I am finding it difficult to finish. The concept is there but the execution of it is poorly done. The gameplay loop is very boring, which the issue is that your creature is the core to your damage, and the supporting role, the character is unimpactful. You can stun the monsters, but you do no damage. It was decent early game but the further you move into the game, the less impactful the character is. The story is more interesting than the gameplay...I will update this review once I finish the game...

A fun action RPG where you fight alonside your creatures. The combat is fun, the story is simple, straightforward one and the creature variety is pretty good. On the negative side the world lacks interactivity and I've seen my fair share of bugs. The game is a bit overcluttered with menus and systems such as: -Managing a garden, making sure your creatures get your desired stats as well as berries for futures ones. -A perk system, picking stats or special effects and even more as your creature levels up -Equiping and upgrading special attack gems. Manually activated. -Filling your monster manual, Increasing your character's stats and improving future encounters with the researched creature. -Equiping a hat, very important. Each of which, if you wish to play optimically, you will need to do for every new creatures met, party change or as your monsters level up enough. While a bit overbearing, creating a full group of monsters and seeing all that work come to fruition helped the overall experience. The meat is in the combat, not much of anything else.

Creature Keeper is a unique creature collector game. It has several interesting mechanics that I haven’t encountered in other games of the same genre. Instead of the typical turn-based battle system, creatures fight in real-time, using their own signature moves in combination with the player’s attacks. All creatures and attacks have one of three types. This forces the player to change up their active creatures and attack style on the fly to combat the opponent’s type. I also adore the unconventional healing mechanic of the game (you spawn healing hearts by petting your creatures, and you can do this whenever). Aside from combat and healing mechanics there are also novel ways to unlock the player’s skills as well as your creatures’ perks. I especially liked how the bestiary functions – slowly unfolding an artistic representation of each creature. I really enjoyed the design and animations of the creatures. They feel like they’re always active and responding to something. Their design is also very clearly more detailed than the rest of the game. For the most part this is not an issue. For the most part, the world doesn’t feel empty and all the characters are very expressive despite …

UI is a little clunky, and there's a decent amount of mechanics that the game doesn't tell you enough about, but the base game is solid. The Bestiary is the main focus of progression, letting your character get stronger and access more creature potential. If you like creature collecting games or rpgs with a lot of depth, then this is for you.

Can't even get out of the tutorial area. Follow the prompts that tell you how to swap between monsters in your party, but instead my character just starts moving around and closing the window. 25 out of the 40 minutes played was troubleshooting and messing with settings and controls to try and make things actually work properly in this game. The game recommends using controller, but I don't care for controllers, so I will always prefer key/mouse. If that is what the problem is, then that needs to be fixed. It's been almost a year since an update has come out for the game. Not worth picking the game up until they actually fix some of the problems people are having.

I think if some things were fixed in this game, it would be amazing. I haven't played it in months, hopefully it's gotten an update since then
