A conspiracy is welling deep within the stone walls of an ancient castle.The keep’s master is leading its denizens to construct a revolutionary new device made to move the world forward onto a new path of evolution.Arriving to investigate is our plucky adventurer, Moth, but what lies in store is a secret too vast to be contained by mere castle walls. Creepy Castle is an exploratory, sidescrolling RPG about an awesome moth, conveniently named Moth, who aims to uncover the vast secrets of a creepy castle. It’s a fresh and charming adventure with the looks of a classic, but don’t be fooled by its retro appearance—it’ll kill you with modern gameplay mechanics. A twist on traditional turn-based combat, Duels offer players a chance to score free hits on their opponent by performing well. Players shouldn’t let their guard down outside of Duels, however, or they might allow Moth to be squished by one of the castle’s many real-time dangers, like traditional run-and-jump platformers.

Creepy Castle, developed by Dopterra and published by Nicalis, Inc., is the kind of indie project that feels unapologetically experimental, combining several genres and ideas into a single experience that doesn’t always aim for cohesion as much as it does individuality. At its core, it follows Moth, a small insect adventurer navigating a mysterious, interconnected castle filled with peculiar characters, hidden mechanisms, and fragments of a larger narrative. Right away, the game establishes a tone that is equal parts eerie and whimsical, leaning into its strangeness rather than trying to smooth it into something more conventional. The structure of the game is rooted in exploration, with the castle acting as a layered environment that gradually opens up as new abilities and items are acquired. There’s a clear influence from Metroidvania design here, with backtracking playing a significant role in uncovering secrets and progressing through the map. Movement is straightforward but effective, allowing players to traverse rooms, interact with objects, and uncover hidden paths at a steady pace. No Spoiler Review: GAMEPLAY- it's serviceable and reminds me of old Game Boy games, however that doesn't excuse the fact that it could have many QoL improvements, with the map being one of them: Reminds me of the original Metroid and Metroid 2 where it was very easy to get lost and was punishing, but for the wrong reasons. If you put this game down and come back a week later, you'll likely have a hard time remember what you were doing or where to go, which can be infuriating. It's especially annoying because enemies don't respawn, so if you forgot where you have to go, you gotta walk in circles until you find it which will end up taking a while. Kindly check the community guides page to get the map patch and fix slowdowns to run at 30 FPS instead of 24. Highly recommend running the map patch, then changing the FPS. You will tank a lot of damage, but will also often have ways to heal yourself. It is not a difficult game for majority of the gameplay, but don't expect accomplishing a no-hit run. You'll ocasionally enter a duel with an enemy, which will be a small minigame where depending on your performance, you can attack without losing health, or have both you and enemy tank damag…2 found this helpful

Couldn't stand the controls and the retro aspect goes too hard to the point of annoyances. It's possible to make retro feeling games while applying modern design standards for a better player experience.
cute and cozy lil rpg adventure... in a dungeon!
Walked through a castle ghosts started critiquing my taste in horror films now I’m stuck in a sequel.
