About Daymare: 1998

✦ AI summary

Fight your way through a research facility overrun by mutated creatures while unraveling a conspiracy across three playable characters, each offering a unique perspective on the nightmare unfolding. This love letter to '90s survival horror delivers that era's punishing resource scarcity and strategic combat with modernized graphics and visceral enemy detail.

DAYMARE: 1998 is a third-person survival horror with hardcore survival mechanics and hard to kill enemies. It requires a strategical approach to combat and puzzles and offers a multi-character point of view on the story, revealing a deep and obscure lore.
The scene is set with a secret research facility, a deadly chemical weapon and a special security team to investigate this incident with the potential to become much more than just a security breach. Follow the steps of an elite soldier, a helicopter pilot and a forest ranger, as they play out their roles in an event that transforms one peaceful small town into a deadly zone and its citizens into bloodthirsty monsters. Take the creatures down first, before looking for any clues and evidence to bring more sense to the mess. Keep track of your itinerary, as resources are scarce in a situation like this! Anything can happen when your daymares become real…

Fans of the iconic cinematographic brands and classical gloomy survival horror games of the '90s will be thrilled, seeing how DAYMARE: 1998 recreates the atmosphere of the most beloved works from the end of the millennium and places a typical yet fresh story in the middle of it. The plot unfolds through the eyes of various characters, putting players in the shoes of different personalities that will guide them through their theories and doubts about the situation. Backtracking, managing ammo, collecting lore items, solving environmental puzzles and the overall difficulty will help players jump a couple decades back and get chilled to the bone in their first real daymare.

Main features:

  • Multi-character POV – see the story from different angles and discover the truth
  • Dreadful enemies – rendered in detail with lifelike animations and dismemberment
  • Realistic HUD – check inventory, health and position on a special piece of gear
  • Environmental puzzles – finding your way is not always easy, look for clues
  • Classic mechanics - limited ammo and save points, backtracking, collectibles, tough enemies and more
  • Modern graphics and effects – not all is classic thanks to Unreal Engine 4
  • Experience 90s – homage to the era with tons of references

Daymare 1998 was an awesome experience from start to finish. If your a fan of the classic or new Resident Evil games , you'll definitely love this. The game has that same tense, creepy atmosphere where your constantly on edge, solving puzzle's, and trying to survive 10/10.

I'm on Chapter 4 out of 5 and I plan to finish it, but felt compelled to share my review. It's clear the developers have a love for old school survival horror with numerous references to other games. However, the game is barred down by a lot of Unity jankiness. I lost progress a handful of times and had to restart areas because of one glitch or another that stopped my progression (such as going up an elevator lift and getting stuck in mid-air and being unable to move). The combat is fine, the story is bad and the voice acting is bad (but maybe you can overlook and forgive those), but there's also a terrible, terrible reload mechanic. I imagine the decision was done to had tension, but essentially you can only reload your magazines/clips from the menu and then load them into your gun from the game with either a quick reload (drop your old magazine and have to pick it up) or slow reload (you keep your magazine in your inventory). This choice just bogs the game down a lot and becomes annoying versus tense. If you see it for $3? Maybe grab it if you're a die-hard fan of survival horrors, but otherwise skip it - there are better games out there to play even amongst indies and smal…

This game is good in the way a cheesy, poorly written movie is good. The voice acting is, frankly, 'Jill Sandwich' quality and I didn't find the game all too challenging. That said, the gameplay loop is fun. The ammo management system is a bit jank (you have to prepare your magazines ahead of time which is a little bit of a time drain.) There's only one 'bad' part that really stuck out which was one phase of a boss fight near the end which, even with the right strategy has some mild RNG to it. Otherwise a good homage to the genre without any game breaking bugs. Don't expect anything re-defining but good if you need a few laughs and some fresh ground to scratch that itch.

THIS IS JANK AT AN EXTREME(and I love it), daymare was a experience unlike any I have ever had while being very similar to resident evil(clearly a clone). The voice acting is funny and the story is pretty whatever besides a few cool things but this game is just a treat for those that like kinda bad games 5.5/10
