In a flooded future world rife with violence, rumors of killer machines have spread far and wide. As a number of factions emerge – violently vying for power – you become the sole defender of humanity’s last standing government. Only you can create the ultimate squad and save humanity in this turn based, tactical RPG with roguelike elements.
The game had some issues at launch but has had six major updates since then to directly address much of the feedback in that initial wave of reviews.

WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE LAUNCH?

- Significantly reduced the game length to make it less of a grind
- Stealth and enemy ambushes, plus a new class (Saboteur) to take advantage
- Free switching between characters
- More maps that require different tactics
- Over powered skills and combos were rebalanced
- More weapons, effects and death animations
- More story cutscenes and a "proper" ending
- Refined the existing enemies and created a few new ones
- Full controller support
- Localization into Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese
- Additional options, including Color Blind mode
- Increased turn speed and reduced friction in many of the menus
- Casual mode for those that felt the original game was too punishing
- Many more changes in direct response to player feedback

if XCOM combat and FTL exploration had a roguelike baby this would be the ugly charming one. DoE is what would happen if humanity would be driven to live under the sea like little crabs that fight each other for survival with a rogue AI and crazy cultists thrown into the mix. The story is average but the music and spritework is nice. The combat missions and environments get really repetitive, really fast but the enemies do get stronger and more clever as the story progresses. If there is a room for great improvement in this game is the variation of the tile the mission areas are made of, I fought in stupid warehouses like 90% of the time and when I found myself fighting in an indoor farm, it was a breath of fresh air. Fighting enemy submarines is weird, since the enemy crew politely gets out of their death machines to engage you in combat.. its so dumb.. oh yeah, you also get out of your own submarine to cordially meet them. I had fun most of the time, this game's strength is making up your squad from several classes which you can pick and figuring out the synergy between them, should you get 3 snipers and a warden to lure enemies out while the snipers overwatches and kills e…5 found this helpful
The game has tactical shooting combat with procedural map generation. The submarine itself does not feature in the combat, but can get healed or damaged via the random nodes on the map. I think the setting spoke to me which led me to purchase it, but the story is a weak point. I like roguelike and roguelite games, if you do this is a nice one to pad out your library. Nice small tactical squad game with most of what you'd expect: character classes, experience, gear, turn-based combat, cover, overwatch... The game doesn't really do anything particularly new and battles can start feeling repetitive, but it works, it has a cool setting (post apocalyptic flooded world) and some neat set-pieces (sub to sub boarding, floating platforms). I enjoyed going through the campaign, taking the scenic route with the optional missions for new submarines/classes/weapons, but one could probably beat it a lot quicker by focusing on the main story objectives. Only personal niggle is that there are no underwater seafloor battles like in XCOM: Terror from the Deep or Stirring Abyss. That would have done a lot to reinforce the setting. But as-is, it is charming already.1 found this helpful
Simple but fun turn-based tactics. Overall I would recommend it for fans of the genre, but I would warn you not to expect anything revolutionary. Pros: - Easy to learn gameplay. Good controller compatability. - Interesting setting - Enjoyable and balanced progression Cons: - Could benefit from more complexity and variety in the missions and units available - Minimal story
It is a fun game that you can play for a few hours. It has a nice and quick story.
A little bit of FTL, a little bit of X-Com, has submarines... what's not to like?
