Depths of Madness

"Depths of Madness" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. It's from South Arkansas University in the USA. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. This is a 6 year old student project set in an underwater facility, a basic low effort tech demo of an adventure game. The game's mechanics are basic: finding keys and using explosives, with a frustratingly uninspired Cthulhu AI that relentlessly hunts you down. I'm not sure if the students graduated. I hope not. Everything was going great with this game... finding recordings... learning the lore... avoiding the monster... then as I'm trying to escape, I just fall into nothingness through the floor. Great. I noticed when I moused over the taskbar icon to X out of the game, I saw it was titled "SeniorProject2019". That explains a lot. Rating: 2/10

I see this game as an opportunity that has been wasted. If I were a teacher for game development, I would give this student a C- just because I can see the potential they would have if they understood how to incorporate horror elements into a game. This is pretty much just a walking simulator and a ghost/squidward/kuthulu creature that chases you but can easily lose you within 3 seconds. I rate this game a 2.5/10.

The name is very fitting for a game that is so bad and broken. Play for sh*ts, giggles, and most of all, thinly-veiled glitches. :) No-clip without even trying. 0/10

Игра "Depths of Madness" погружает в ад кромешный. Жуткая атмосфера, шепоты в темноте и непредсказуемый сюжет сводят с ума. Гениально продуманный геймплей держит в напряжении до финала. Это хоррор высшей пробы, от которого мурашки по коже. Обязательна к прохождению!
