"Dr. Frank's Build a Boyfriend" is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This LGBTQIA+ friendly e-book is, well, it says right on the box, all about the authors imaginary boyfriend, who is a Frankenstein's monster style construction. Psychologists would be having a field day on that one. Anyway the intention was for this to be a comedy piece, but as always it's hard to laugh when the cringe is so intense... the high school literature club fan-fiction writing isn't impressing anyone, and also, we're here on Steam for games, not cringey e-books. Dr. Frank's Build a Boyfriend is a really silly little visual novel that mixes comedy, romance and point and click puzzles in a way I did not expect. I play as Dr. Frank, a scientist who has been kicked out of his PhD program and medical school, only to have his boyfriend Dominik steal his resurrection research and run off with it. Frank decides the best way to get revenge is to create an artificial life form and present it as his own work, except he also wants to make himself the perfect boyfriend. That is such a ridiculous setup that I already know the game is not taking itself seriously. The main thing I like is how much personality the writing has. Frank is a very energetic character, and the dialogue constantly leans into the absurd situation without making the whole thing completely meaningless. There is a visual novel section with more than 20,000 words, so there is actually a decent amount of writing for such a small free game. I also like the little presentation touches, because the character expressions, dialogue and menus all help give it a homemade personality rather than making it feel like a completely generic visual novel. Super cute game! It's been on my wishlist for years and finally got around to playing it! I love the artwork, story, and the dialogue was great and had me cracking up. Overall a really fun kinda cozy game to play.
