Dream #46

It’s a nice casual game to kill some time with. Sail around and check it out, nothing amazing, but I enjoyed it.

This "walking simulator" puts you in a boat and lets you meander about maps and scare frogs into the water and weirdly throws platitudes at you that would be more at home on a wall in a gym. Its slow which is fine, its art style is very much like windwaker and has a nice ambience with a day and night cycle. However unlike windwaker there is hardly any sort of relaxing dreamlike music and the controls of the boat were the jankiest boat controls ive ever come across. With windwaker made a decade before this game and even the assassins creed franchise which was also built in unity like this game i expect better movement of boat controls, especially since you're using the same engine. The boat controls actively ruin this game as you're trying to collect all the things and just relax. I shouldnt have to worry about my boat steering too far to the left or right or even knocking into invisible objects. As much as i wanted to dream i feel like i just woke up from a nightmare.

Dream #46 is less of a game and more of a poorly made art exhibition. At best this could be described as a "walking sim", but even walking sims have conclusive loops and other interaction deeper than this "experience", and as always, if a developer ever describes their "game" as an "experience", it's neither, but it will be bad. All you do is steer a badly implemented boat down a crappy low poly artscape, roll over some stuff, honk, and get bits of text lobbed at you. Ugh. We get this non-game shovelware on Steam whenever your usual Starbucks barista/McDonalds frycook art school dropout finally gets a restraining order from the local art galleries so turns to Steam Direct to try get their art published somewhere so they can finally dream of moving out of their parents basement. It's true that games can be art... art is where the pinnacles of craftsmanship and quality meet vision and narrative to create an experience far greater than the sum of the parts. This isn't a game at all, and the craftsmanship and narrative are terrible. This isn't making art better, it's just making gaming worse. I really want to like this game, it's absolutely gorgeous and I love the idea of just gradually sailing around, collecting things, and enjoying the scenery. Unfortunately, the controls of this game are just really bad, in my opinion. I constantly kept bumping my boat into things, and while I think it's cool you can control the boat's sail with W and S to go faster or slower, as someone used to this simply moving a character forward or backwards, I kept hitting this to go forward and would accidentally get a boost in speed. In general, it felt like I had to pay way too much attention to the visuals of the boat, when I wanted to be looking around at the scenery. It got to a point where I had to put down the game despite wanting to continue because it was frustrating me so much, and this is supposed to be a relaxing game. I also personally found the affirmations you collect creepy, but I'd easily be able to ignore this and keep playing for the beautiful environments if, again, the controls just weren't so bad. Unfortunate, but I just wouldn't recommend this one because it doesn't feel relaxing to play.

Game looks fine but the boat handles bad. After playing dredge, I feel like it could be smoother. Couldnt play long with werid controls.

there's a difference between "casual relaxing exploration walkin sim" and "read positive affirmations while moving the slowest moving boat toward flowers sometimes."
