this game is short yet it manages to be incredibly touching and charming despite its length. the art style is simple, but so cute. i love the interactivity, it really invites you to slow down and take a moment to breathe. overall, DUET is a beautiful game, i just wish it was a little longer

DUET is a compact narrative adventure built around a simple but emotionally effective idea: sometimes the beginning of an important friendship can be more memorable than a grand adventure. Developed and published by Dolos Studio, this Touhou Project fan game explores the first meeting between Renko Usami and Maribel “Merry” Hearn. Instead of concentrating on the frantic battles and supernatural spectacle commonly associated with Touhou, it slows everything down and focuses on two people gradually forming a connection. The result is a gentle, personal experience that values atmosphere and emotion over mechanical complexity. Renko begins the story caught in an ordinary university routine. Her days feel repetitive, while her interest in astronomy and the night sky provides an escape from that monotony. DUET is a really lovely little narrative game, and I liked how much emotion it manages to create without using any dialogue. It tells the first meeting between Renko Usami and Maribel Hearn through small everyday moments, and I found that approach surprisingly effective. Instead of constantly explaining what the characters are thinking, the game lets me understand their connection through actions, expressions and the way they react to each other. The gameplay is very simple and mostly built around small interactive activities. I follow Renko through her daily routine, doing ordinary things such as getting ready, eating and studying, while gradually becoming more involved with Merry. I liked how these simple activities become more meaningful as the relationship develops. There is no complicated system to learn, which lets me focus almost completely on what the game is trying to communicate. The wordless storytelling is easily my favorite part. I normally expect a story driven game to rely heavily on dialogue, but DUET proves that facial expressions, gestures and small details can say a lot on their own. It is extremely short and simplistic, if not a bit tedious. I only recommend it since it is so short not to be too much of a waste of time and it is free. There really isn't much substance or gameplay, but, for what it is going for, it is fine. Just don't have too high expectations.
