About EARTHLOCK

✦ AI summary

Embark on a challenging turn-based JRPG adventure across the frozen world of Umbra, where you'll master dual-stance combat, customize characters through a unique talent board system, and engage in strategic boss battles that demand careful tactical thinking. Between battles, tend your own island farm, craft powerful weapons and perks from magical ingredients, and breed adorable creatures—all wrapped in charming art that belies the game's demanding strategic depth.

Don’t let the cute cartoonish art style fool you. This game is challenging. True fans of the JRPG genre will love it, casual players may want to look elsewhere. Invest the time, and EARTHLOCK will reward you with a depth in gameplay that will test the most strategic of players.

Discover Your Hero Within

Embark on a journey to save the beautiful world of Umbra, a harsh planet that stopped spinning thousands of cycles ago. What started as a mission to rescue Amon’s uncle from the clutches of an ancient cult, soon spirals into an adventure that was centuries in the making. You must bring together this group of unlikely heroes to stop the ruinous past from repeating itself.

The World

Explore the magical world of Umbra and discover places lost in the past to uncover the secrets of the Earthlock Artifact.

The Heroes

Unite this band of heroes, all with their own journeys of self discovery and venture into the world to save the planet from the growing evil within. Mix up your strategy to beat your enemies using two different stances per character, and build your characters' battle bond to unleash powerful abilities or unique perks.

The Battles

Dive into turn based battles on arenas in the grand tradition to explore the depths of tactical choices needed to survive the fierce boss fights.

Your Own Secret Island

Take a break from adventure and escape to your own home island. Here you can harvest magical ingredients and craft weapons, helpful items and perks.

Grow Stuff

Gather seeds to grow amazing plants both on the island and elsewhere. Many provide necessary ingredients to make your way around the world. Some, when they ripen, in stead produce living off spring, cute little kittens and other creatures that wander about for pure enjoyment.

The Overworld

With plenty of stuff to do you can lose yourself in the Overworld. Scavenge for items, pick flowers, catch cute Bibis or dig up treasures to trade or take back to Plumpet Island to concoct the strangest potions and ammunitions giving you a leg up in your next battle.

The Talent Table

EARTHLOCK features a unique talent board system; a refreshing take on the classic skill tree. This board gives you complete control over your player's strengths and weaknesses. You can swap talents on and off the board, allowing you to finely tune each character to your desired playing style. The talent board also features “Perk Talents” which you can craft and collect in the world, giving you special combat skills and abilities.

Some RPGs are really aggressive about not telling you how some of the fundamental mechanics work. This is one of them. Some abilities have icons that say they're magic + physical + some kind of magic + some kind of physical. Which stat do they scale off of? Which enemies take extra damage? Which enemies take less? Which damage type takes priority? You'll never know. This game won't tell you. There is no information online. Why would you play a JRPG with these restrictions?

Of JRPGs, Earthlock is definitely one. It's an older game by now, but I don't think that it ever added up to much given that less than half of its players managed to get an achievement automatically granted by playing through about 20 minutes of content. I was nodding off while trying to play it.

I never dreamt to be a stategist on my life but this game almost made me do. Bought at insane 90% discount in 2023 and directly played it through but about 65% progress I lost interest and abandoned it. After becoming Achievement Hunter, I determined to clear the game and succeded with mixed feeling actually. because : Con : No maps in all dugeons and world map. You have to survive and prepare for surpised encounters. Maps only for marking treasure chests. Con : At early stages this game was easy to play and have easy boss battle..suitable for 12+ but afterward believe me it should be for 17+ Con : Grinding and warping to various places often. The best walking speed was
Gnart
then
PAT
. Con : Repeated quests. Con : Detail logs are inexsistance. If you don't remember where you left-off last time..you'll be running along all places just to figure-out. Hits places to do your progress, marked in yellow before you warp. + No random battles or ATB. Engage battle only when you're ready and you can escape/feign death except boss battle. + No free-loaders of all charactes. You have to play as all of them. Their turn will be available o…

Feels very Final Fantasy X to me in ways I can't quite put my finger on. Might be the turn-based combat combined with the puzzle temples and the interesting approach to character advancement, all of which are my jam. It's also pleasantly short and focused, so it's not the kind of time investment "this is like a mainline Final Fantasy" could imply, but there's still things to do and collect so it doesn't feel empty or incomplete imo.
