(Spoiler warning) Does an absence-of-plot spoiler still merit a spoiler warning? Well, anyhow: By the same developer of Voids Vigil and Boneraiser Minions, this game came earlier but aimed much higher artistically. I respect that ambition. However, the puzzles were obtuse, the difficulty unbalanced (with normal difficulty being annoying and tedious, and easy difficulty trivializing the game's few mechanical challenges), and the ending extremely unsatisfying with no real denouement or payoff for your efforts. And because you have to suffer through hunger cycles, harsh winters, and trial-and-error puzzle logic (including mazes, which as a rule suck in adventure games), the lack of closure stings more than it would in a casual game. So much of the game involved hints and coyness about the mystery of what is really going on, and the ending just ignores that and gives you some weak scene about finally cleaning your apartment and obtaining enlightenment as a result. No, I am not joking. I uninstalled the game and promptly started cleaning my room, in a quest for ultimate enlightenment.1 found this helpful
I wanted to like this game for it's beautiful aesthetic and chill gameplay loop, and sense of mystery/mysticism. But holy heck, the writing. It's not just bad and distracting, it's so poorly done that it actually prevents you from understanding what to do next. I found a shrine with a description on it that said, "Slatherous bestowith brazen goldenith of bantam boulder radiaiest of lightly light orb at powerith magnificentiestio." No those are not typos on my part. I copied this from a screen shot. This isn't the kind of game where you have to translate things like Chants of Sennaar. All the descriptions are literally like this (but this is the worst offender.). I found myself having to reread sentences multiple times just to figure out what they might mean. And I'm decently well read. This isn't a skill issue. Was the writer writing with a thesaurus? Were they implementing some sort of word conversion algorithm where they write normal sentences and the algorithm spits out a "mystical mysterious" version of the sentence? Were they just putting ly, ith, and est on words at random? Were they doing all three? Another thing. You need rocks to craft some items like an axe and hamm…
Echo of the Wilds is a distinctive survival adventure that takes a quieter and more thoughtful approach than many games in the genre. Developed by caiys and published by caiysware, it places players in a mysterious wilderness where survival is only one part of a much larger journey. Rather than focusing on combat-heavy encounters or large-scale base building, the game emphasizes exploration, self-reliance, and uncovering the secrets of an unfamiliar world. From the opening moments, players are encouraged to learn through observation and experimentation, creating an experience that feels personal and rewarding. The game's central premise revolves around surviving in a vast natural environment while preparing for the arrival of a harsh winter. Resources are limited, and every decision matters. Players must gather food, collect materials, craft tools, and create equipment that will help them endure the changing seasons. The survival mechanics are deep without becoming overwhelming, and they are closely tied to exploration. New discoveries often provide access to better crafting opportunities, while crafted items allow players to venture farther into unknown regions. This interconnect…
