About Familiar Travels - Volume One

You were in a situation that many post-graduates found themselves in, degree on wall, parent's house, everywhere seem to think your degree is just as useless as you do. The uniquely disparaging Quarter Life Crisis has came to you in full force, and you have been left with nothing to do..

And when university has set us up for unreal expectations of the future, there's only one thing left to do..

Grad School.

Through insane luck or divine magic, you've received your acceptance letter to Vanaheim
Home of the Vanaheim Institute of Magic and Technology

There's only one problem, you're distinctly lacking in the magic department. In fact, this is the first time you've become aware of magic's existence.

The internet as a whole was a huge inspiration for this game, We tried to set out to do something new that hasn’t been done in visual novels before by giving people an open world and focusing on character types and personalities that people really see in the modern day, instead of typical archetypes.

We aren’t afraid to talk about issues like mental health, toxic masculinity, issues of self-identity and discovery, and the more complicated nuances of relationships. The candid and straightforward nature of the game is part of the reason I decided to reach out to you.

The people who play the game really connect with it, and I want to have more people take a look and hopefully get the same impact from the game that the game and the community around it had on us.

If you have any questions about the game, we have Steam Discussion page.

✦ AI summary

Players have mixed feelings about this visual novel. Some appreciate its character-driven storytelling and unique approach to the genre with its choice-oriented, semi-sandbox structure that feels more like living through moments than following a linear path. However, others find the pacing slow and the narrative dull, with conversations and plot development that fail to engage them, and some express disappointment that the game is now free-to-play after purchasing it at full price.

I'm really frustrated that I paid $14 for this game, only for it to not only be pretty boring and slow, but for it to also be free to play now. I originally bought the game as a way to support the artists, so I was fine with the price, but seeing that the game is pretty dull and nothing really seems to happen in it (and it seems pretty linear for a visual novel), I am a bit disappointed. I only played about an hour and a half of the game, so maybe it gets more interesting and/or in depth later on, but I honestly couldn't force myself through the dull and boring conversations/characters/plot long enough to get to a potentially more interesting part of the game. Since it is F2P now, I say give it a try and see how you like it, as you might have a different experience than I did. On my end, having paid $14 for this game, I am just really disappointed in the lack of quality of the plot/characters/conversations. On a positive note, the art is amazing and very well done, so I will give this game kudos for that.

Familiar Travels – Volume One, developed by Rose Tudor and Ben Taylor and published by Halftone Studios, is a visual novel that deliberately stretches the expectations of its genre by blending character-driven storytelling with a more open, choice-oriented structure. Instead of guiding players through a tightly controlled narrative path, it offers a semi-sandbox approach where time, relationships, and personal priorities shape the experience. This design choice immediately gives the game a different rhythm, one that feels less like following a story and more like living through a series of interconnected moments. The premise centers on a young adult navigating uncertainty after graduation, suddenly thrust into a magical academic setting that feels both exciting and overwhelming. This duality—mundane life concerns intersecting with a fantastical world—forms the backbone of the narrative. The game uses this contrast effectively, grounding its magical elements in relatable emotional struggles such as self-doubt, ambition, and the fear of falling behind. Rather than focusing on grand external conflicts, it prioritizes internal journeys, making the story feel more personal and introspe…
