You can read my review of the first game in the series, Dave Story for more general thoughts on the developer's style. Briefly: It's very, very raw indie stuff. But I find the sound design, lighting, and pace of these games creepy, immersive, and sometimes beautiful despite the primitive 3D models, poor grammar/translation, etc . The rough edges actually feel very consistent with the pulpy subject matter, so it doesn't bother me here like it would in most games. This game does add new storytelling mechanics and more locations compared to the previous (free) one, and it is about twice as long. However, unlike that game, which recounted a very simple encounter, this one suggests a much more interesting story and relationships, but doesn't develop them much, and ultimately ends very abruptly, so it feels incomplete. The dev is very good at building suspense but very bad at crafting satisfying resolutions. The setup could have sustained perhaps an hour or two more of playtime with a bit more backstory and character info, even if it was just via flashbacks, or documents. And the endi…1 found this helpful
The story follows a man who is called back to his family farm after receiving a call from his father. Something unusual seems to be happening there, and his father needs his help. On the way, the mystery begins to unravel. A quick stop at the local store to pick up groceries turns into an eye-opening experience, as conversations with the townsfolk confirm that the strange rumors spreading through the area are true. It’s not long before the presence of undercover agents, badly disguised and sticking out because of their behavior and clothing, makes the situation even more suspicious. And once you come across a military roadblock staffed with armed soldiers, it becomes undeniable that something is seriously wrong. The gameplay itself is designed to provide a straightforward experience. The game begins with you behind the wheel, driving toward the farm. Although you can steer the car, the freedom is limited to the road because of invisible walls. After the short introduction at the store, you’ll eventually arrive at the farm, where the story progresses through a series of tasks. These objectives are always displayed on your in-game phone, so you rarely feel lost about what to do ne…1 found this helpful
I had a difficult time with bugs that were in the middle of a chapter and I would have to start the chapter over again. Was not a fan of how slow the running was throughout the game, I might as well have not clicked SHIFT at all, hardly any difference. Had to re-read a lot of things due to the lack of commas and periods; it was hard to make sense of what was being said. What should've taken me 40 minutes, took me almost 2 hours. There were times where the SFX sounded like they were just downloaded from a website, and placed in the game without any care of which direction they could be heard from. Speaking of sound: the dialogue from the "military-like-people", it sounded like it was processed with a text-to-speech software; and at the end, I couldn't understand what they were saying, only "fire, fire, fire!" The only praise I have for this game is towards the graphics and music. 4/10
After playing Daves story I had to play Jamies story and yet again I want more, this really puts you in that classic xfiles mood, Really like this concept.
I didn't finish the game due to the amount of times I got stuck because of bugs. I had to restart chapters 3 times and one bug in particular I had to restart the entire game. The writing is bad, The grammar is all over the place, and going by the use of the word "mere" instead of "pond" as well as the Voice acting, I am willing to bet the creators aren't native english speakers. Finally the optimization. I don't have a high end PC, but the fact that this little game is causing it to sound like a jet engine when there are games 10x bigger that don't do that. Something has to be wrong.
Review for Fear The Unknown: Jamie Story - Mixed but Overall Positive (After Finishing)
Overall, this is a playable game with a decent experience—it's short, simple, and fits well as a quick playthrough without overcomplicating things. If you're looking for something light and straightforward, it delivers okay on that front. Pros: - Performance: I ran into a few bugs (detailed below), but they're tolerable overall—no crashes, and it ran smoothly enough to get through. - Story: Not groundbreaking or super compelling, but it's average and acceptable; it keeps things moving without feeling forced. - Graphics: Solid and fitting for the style—nothing flashy, but it works fine. - Gameplay: Essentially a walking simulator focused on exploring the story, which is straightforward and acceptable for what it is. - BGM & SFX: They're at a passable level; they do the job without standing out too much. Cons and Suggestions for Improvement: - Character movement is way too slow—even holding Shift to run doesn't make much difference. Speeding up the base movement would make exploration les…
