Fritz Chess 20 Steam Edition

PRODUCT REFUNDED, Just don't buy the steam edition: 1. all the chessbase login features are removed from the Fritz 20 SE. the video you are seeing above (which is showing the login/logout detail in the upper right corner) is for the normal version that you buy from chessbase website. But in steam version all those things or any link that connects you to your cb account cannot be seen. 2. you just get the software with fritz 20 engine. thats it. no database, no opening tree etc. not even a few gm games. 3. although it is cheaper than the regular version, i would suggest you to get a 1 year subscription from chessbase. it will cost you almost the same but you get a ton of things for a year. (video courses, database, tactics etc) 4. YOU CANNOT PLAY IT WITHOUT INTERNET. what is the point of buying this if i can already analyse my games on chess.com or lichess with stockfish. 5. Also, if you have an older version and are thinking about upgrading it, dont. i have fritz 17 and i manually checked the whole interface. i was unable to find anything new except for those AI personalities. they just say a random line when a particular move is played. 6. This version of the game does not connect with PlayChess meaning that you essentially pay for a product that has part of the features it advertises. What is worse is that there is no warning this is the case. In addition, you cannot play this game offline. This is probably one of the worst features for a chessengine ever, it is clearly a design error. There is no technical support or a chance to refund if you played more than 2 hours, a time allowance that is not enough to understand how the engine behaves.... I have never left a review but was compelled to give 0 marks both to Steam and Fritz on a product that is basically a scam.

I bought this so that I could study chess while in long airplane flights (i.e., no internet connect). It turns out this Steam Fritz requires an internet connection. It's documented and complained about for that reason on forums. Go to offline mode in Steam and this Fritz won't launch (known issue). You can start in online mode and then go on the airplane, but if the App crashes (.... which it does...) then you cannot start it again. So, I am giving Fritz a thumbs down: if I had an internet connection, I would just connect to Lichess.org or Chess.com.

Despite bad reviews here, I find the game really pleasant. The thing I like most is the personalities. I can not distinguinsh between the famous players, I'm not very good for that, but the animals charachters are very differente from each other, Hipermodern have a unique playng, the Owl is hard to beat and so on. The GUI is not so good. I could not make some training lide openings, etc. They could modernize the GUI. Other thing I notice, 20 version is easier to beat in easy game than the 19. Analisys is very good, with coments, but the graphics could be better. I could not make it bigger. 3d boards could be better too, Chessmaster from 25 years ago has better 3d boards, with more control, and I can make the 3d board full screen, which I can not in Fritz. One million games database with games since the 19th century is fun for hours and hours. I really don't know if the Steam version is caped from the original one, but I can recomend it deeply.
