Google Spotlight Stories: Pearl is a very short VR experience that feels more like an animated short than a traditional game. I am placed inside the world of Pearl, following a girl and her dad as they travel around in their old car while their lives change over time. There are no real combat systems, puzzles or complicated objectives here. Instead, I am there to watch the story unfold around me and take in the little details happening in every direction. The VR presentation is easily the best thing about it. The story takes place around the family home and their car, and I can look around the environment while the characters continue acting around me. I really like this because it makes the experience feel different from simply watching a normal animated film on a screen. The characters are not always directly in front of me, so I actually have to pay attention to what is happening around the scene. That makes the VR format feel like it has a proper reason to exist rather than just being a normal video put into a headset. The story itself is simple but it has some emotional weight.
