Grisaia Phantom Trigger Vol.8

100% in sub 8 hours for a fast reader. First ending in sub 6 hours. Volume 8 is an odd one. It starts off and spends a lot of time on a new set of characters which infuriated me. Last volume and you still can't be bothered to tell the actual story? Joke was on me since Patrick, Natalie and the rest of the girl's fates were my favorite part of the volume. The game has two main endings with some minor variations in dialogue/CGs in them depending on your choices. The absolute "worst" ending is what I got on my first try. I thought it was the much more realistic scenario and I liked that one much more. It was a slow burn but once it got half way it did pick up a lot and redeemed the embarrassment of volume 7. There is still a ton of fluff dialogue since the author masturbates over their knowledge of guns/bikes/cars and stuff still. Be warned the bad ending is (major spoilers)[spoiler]brutal. Watching Touka blow her brains out after losing her leg from a land mind was not what I expected to see. [/spoiler] Overall I don't think the Phantom Trigger spin-off is that great. It's a solid read with great art but it doesn't come close to the originals.

The biggest problem this entry has, is the entirely unnecessary Patrick storyline. I *get* why it was added, so its easier to see what its like from a neutral party's perspective of being involved with in a war that involves SORD operatives. .......but they already got the same point across just showing us SORD from rank and file TFA solider perspectives. The Patrick storyline feels like a bizarre reach just to make 9ish new young Nuns, and kill them in all the horrific and sometimes accidentaly ways that can happen in war. When it wasn't wasting my time with Patrick and the Nunlettes, it was fairly fine, about exactly what the series has given us from prior entries. But as an ending? Kind of lackluster, and rather blatantly a holding pattern meant to tide people over until they can actually be bothered to make an actual Grisaia game. Still a recommend, as the writing for all the main cast is still its strongest selling point, but do not buy any of the other Phantom Trigger entries for more than 10 bucks each (or Volume 7 and 8 for more than 15 bucks), as nothing really.......happens by the end.
