This is 90% of a good game. The graphics are nice and surprisingly well animated, the weapons are plentiful and varied, the controls work well, the upgrade system is simple yet allows for creative strategies, the enemies pose actually different challenges instead of being simple recolors of a few base types... What's the problem, then? Well, the game only has one game mode, and it's a pretty bad one. You are in an arena, a weapon pickup that replaces your held weapon spawns, you pick it up within 15 seconds else it's game over, 1.5 seconds later another weapon pickup spawns and the cycle repeats. Enemies spawn too, at slightly longer intervals (3, maybe 4 seconds), but they're just an obstacle: your score is determined ONLY by how many weapon pickups you manage to collect before dying, nothing else. In practice, it's quite common to pick up a weapon and swap it for another before having the opportunity to shoot even a single enemy with it. It's hard to keep track of all the weapons with special properties that are ruined by this game mode, here's a couple examples. [list] [*] Thermal lance takes longer to charge up than it takes for a new weapon to spawn [*] Stake launcher in theo…

This game isn't designed very well. No offense to the developer or anything, this game just is not executed well at all in my opinion. I bought this game on steam while it was heavily discounted, but I also bought this game on the Nintendo switch for full price and that's where my gripes mainly come from. On the switch you obviously use a controller to play but the default button layout is so abhorrent it should be studied. Most of enemies had uninspired blob designs and then there's an orange evil wobbuffet that shoots projectiles at you which just pissed me off to no end. They for some reason have infinite range and take way to many bullets to kill. On keyboard and mouse a lot of my issues are fixed, since you don't have to choose between shooting, aiming, and jumping and can do all of them simultaneously. Playing with a keyboard made the game feel less like juggling flaming chainsaws and more like playing an actual video game. My final issue with the game though is the way you unlock new worlds. You need to not only complete all the levels in a world, but also grind an arbitrary amount of score across all levels. Which was the final nail in the coffin for me. Will I revisit thi…

Super Crate Box's cooler brother. Very similar gameplay loop; pick up a weapon, blast enemies out of the way, grab the next weapon, repeat, but it has a nicely expanded arsenal, 32 stages, and five distinct zones with unique enemies and hazards in each. The movement is snappy, the sound is crunchy, and the loadout system provides a really nice extra touch of strategy when you're pushing for hundreds of points on the leaderboards. It's not something anyone but the most dedicated score-chasers are going to spend 50 hours on, but for 5$ it's well worth it.

The goal is grabbing guns, not killing enemies. It just works. Every couple seconds its a new tool with a new set of problems, and the frantic, split-second decision-making feels great.

More fun than I expected it would be when I bought it. It also has more content than I thought it would. Its really satisfying to shoot enemies, dodge projectiles and collect guns. It can genuinely get pretty intense at times. Fun game!
