Harmonia Full HD Edition

Harmonia Full HD Edition, developed and published by VISUAL ARTS/Key, is a lovingly restored and enhanced version of Key’s 2016 kinetic visual novel, a work that distills the studio’s trademark emotional storytelling into a brief but profoundly affecting experience. This edition not only updates the visuals to full high-definition but also includes newly recorded full voice acting for the protagonist and supporting characters, breathing new life into a story that explores the essence of humanity in a world where it has nearly disappeared. Like many of Key’s works, Harmonia does not rely on branching paths or multiple endings; it is a singular, linear narrative—one meant to be felt rather than “played,” its emotional resonance carried through atmosphere, music, and introspection rather than choice. Set in a distant post-apocalyptic future, Harmonia begins with a solitary figure awakening in the ruins of civilization. This protagonist, a humanoid machine known as a Phiroid, discovers his mechanical right hand and realizes that he is not human. If you're here just for a small 5-7 hour window into an interesting world, this is probably going to hit the spot for you. If you're coming here after reading Planetarian (like myself) and hoping for something similar, you'll get that, it just hits weaker in all aspects. Perhaps as expected from a work seeking to ape its appeal. That said, Harmonia has wonderful music and voice performances, the main character himself being a nice addition, and the visuals, while a little dated, hold up quite well in their HD forms. (On my 32'' 4k monitor it still looked great.) The only really bad artwork is the main in the final preview image on the store. His artwork is horrible and out of place, so please don't take that image as a knock on the whole work.

Another Key VN about robots in a post-apocalyptic world? What?! Harmonia is pretty good. It tells the story of Rei, a humanoid robot who wakes up in an abandoned robot factory and walks until he finds a town. He integrates into the community of the town and helps Shiona, a nun with whom he starts living, bring a sense of togetherness back to the townspeople. Bandits are an issue in this world with scarce resource, though, so its uncertain whether the town will be able to hold onto its happiness forever. The story is surprisingly good, despite how simple its plot and straightforward its messaging (emotions and empathy for others are what make us human) are—like, extremely so. It's predictable, too. And not only if you've read another Key VN, but if you've read any other story, ever. Still, Harmonia manages to be about as good as a story this plain can be; it's not amazing by any means, but it makes good use of basic storytelling techniques, and shines in its simplicity. 7/10
