★About HEBEREKE
HEBEREKE is a game developed by Sunsoft in 1991.
The main character, Hebe, is a little creature with a unique manner of speaking. The comical universe of the game and its cute characters are what made it so popular back then.
Another reason for its popularity is its action maze-like design. The player must explore every corner of the map to find their way in this surreal universe. The soundtrack is also to be mentioned: in contrast to the surreal world depicted, the music is more down-to-earth and straight to the point.

It really pains me to write this review. I still consider Hebereke/Ufouria to be my favorite NES/Famicom game. Yes, even above mammoths like SMB3, Kirby's Adventure, DuckTales, and yeah I'd easily take it over Gimmick! if I'm being quiet honest. But I can't recommend this version for a number of reasons: 1. You're getting the raw Japanese Hebereke. Not Ufouria, Hebereke. I would think a modern emulation port of Hebereke should include both games. 8-bit Nintendo rom files are not that big. In lieu of a real in-game translation, you get option to view text boxes on another interface, either as they appeared in Ufouria or a rather rough and unpolished translation of the Hebereke text. This weird "translation screen" approach really doesn't work. 2. The extra features aren't really writing home about. There's _some_ art and a speedrun mode, but if you're hoping for more historic details on Sunsoft's mascot and/or this game (which, as indicated by unused graphic files in a prototype for Ufouria, might have actually began life as "Ufouria" and not "Hebereke"). The "museum" aspect could have used more work. I have no interest in speedrunning, so I have no idea how that holds up. 3. Wh…2 found this helpful

Really good Metroidvania with an awesome soundtrack. Just can't recommend getting it on Steam. I feel nowadays, re-releases of classic games get most of their value in 2 different ways: 1. It is compilation of multiple classics 2. The extra content included For this re-release, it is lacking in both ways. For starters, it is only Hebereke. As in, it's only the japanese version of the game. I just can't see any reason why they couldn't have included [i]Ufouria: the Saga[/i] as well (which is the english version). As for the extra content, there are some really neat inclusions, like full scans of the game's boxes and manuals, but not enough for the full asking price. There are also some quality-of-life features like save states and rewinding, but that's a pretty common feature in other emulators. Lastly, what makes this re-release interesting for me is the achievements, and even then got disappointed as there's one achievement that has issues unlocking, and I couldn't find any feasable solution other that replaying through the whole game again. Overall, I wouldn't recommend getting this re-release. If you want to play Hebereke, let's just say there are other options out there.…
Simple NES metroidvania-style game. If you are a fan of that genre, this is worth playing. Graphics are charming and music is great. This rerelease is fine barring a few issues such as no remappable controls and no English translation (don't worry, you aren't really missing much.). Might be a better experience to just get a ROM online, but this is a worthwhile and cheap purchase.
Despite the fact that most of the game was in Japanese (even if you choose English) I liked it!
