HAAK is a polished action-platformer that successfully blends the exploration-driven design of classic Metroidvanias with a memorable post-apocalyptic science fiction setting. Developed by Blingame and published by OKJOY, the game places players in the role of Haak, a lone traveler searching for answers and a missing family member while navigating a civilization left in ruins after a devastating catastrophe. Throughout the journey, players explore sprawling interconnected environments filled with abandoned cities, underground facilities, dangerous creatures, hidden technology, and survivors struggling to rebuild their lives. The narrative slowly unfolds through exploration, conversations, and environmental storytelling, allowing the mysteries of the world to emerge naturally instead of relying on lengthy exposition. Exploration serves as the heart of the experience, rewarding players who take the time to investigate every corner of the game's expansive map. Each region features its own visual identity, hazards, and gameplay mechanics, encouraging continuous curiosity. Progression follows the familiar Metroidvania formula, where newly acquired abilities unlock shortcuts, secret pas…2 found this helpful
One of the best metroidvanias I’ve played. It’s rare to find such a well-crafted map, extremely fluid gameplay, AND a unique and engaging story all in one game. I only wish there were a few more boss fights, but this is still a must-play for fans of the genre.2 found this helpful
It has been a long time since I got completely captured by a game. Boot it after dinner, next time I looked at my phone it was 1am. Besides all the excellence in the Metroidvania game design, I think what the game did really well is the balance between "it is difficult" but "I can do it". The difficulty rise gradually but everytime you get challenged, it felt fair. This kept me exploring, solving puzzles and wait for the next one. It has really unique humor, especially if you understamd Chinese, even better if you grow up in China. The art style, the small pieces of reading materials are really stylish and can only be fully appreciated if you are familiar with the 70s and the 80s time in China. The story telling is also quite interesting, reminds me of Dark Souls.
However I think I missed the entire quest line of the guitar girl and not sure if anything will happen there....
This is a great hidden gem of Metroidvania game, and a really good one. A great "holiday game" if you like.2 found this helpful
Artdesign is good, but level design, gameplay, progression... well pretty much everything else is very mediocre1 found this helpful
I was impressed with the demo, but after playing with the main game.. If you like the puzzles and platforming in metroidvanias, then oooh booy you'll love this one. felt like never ending platforming and gotta agree there isn't much boss fights. if there are bosses, they only last a few minutes and then baaack to puzzles and plaatfooorms! at this point i just wanna be done with this, even if i normally explore as much as i can but just hours and hourse of platforms, puzzles and mobs.. just can't1 found this helpful
