HEGGO is a charmingly unconventional roguelike shooter that blends frantic combat, tactical decision-making, and resource management into a surprisingly thoughtful indie experience. "HEGGO" is one of literally thousands of retro top-down/twin stick shooters infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "top-down shooter" on the Steam store page yields over six thousand results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. Despite the garbage tier visual presentation on this train wreck, there's actually a progression system. It's not a good one, it's in fact awful, but hey, at least it's there. Otherwise it's just a really bad plot... maybe this was put on Steam as a joke? It's about an egg in hell, and you make a deal with the devil. Oh, I get it, devilled eggs. That's a reason to incinerate $100 on Steam Direct. In the modern era of high quality bleeding edge PC gaming, these kinds of flat, lazy, lackluster top-down shooters just don't cut it. This is a dead genre for a reason. Even though this is "free", it failed to attract any interest for gamers here on Steam Direct for obvious reasons. HEGGO is a strange little roguelike shooter that I found surprisingly fun. I play as an Egg Kid who has been executed by a king and sent to hell, where I make a deal with the demon Egg Overlord and help defeat monsters as part of a revenge story. The whole thing has a silly dark humour to it, and I liked how the game mixes that ridiculous premise with some genuinely challenging gameplay. The main idea is that I have to decide how many monsters I want to face in each round. Stronger enemies can give me better rewards, but they also take more time and make the fight more dangerous. I really liked this system because time is basically another resource that I have to manage. I cannot simply throw the biggest enemies into every round and expect everything to work out. Sometimes it is smarter to take an easier fight so I have enough time left to prepare for what comes next. The shooting itself has a nice bullet hell feeling to it. I have to move around the enemies, avoid attacks and try to clear everything before the timer becomes a problem.
