About Hoverboy

WARNING: this game may potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.

Hoverboy is an interactive musical playlist showcasing music from Jesse Aidyn (full album), Multi-Memory Controller (1 song), and Ginger Breaker (1 song), where you get to explore different worlds and interact with the environment to the sound of a playlist. In part inspired by music visualizers, it is a highly experimental take on the concept of music videos.

Some primary features:
  • A vastly different world for each one of the 11 available songs.
  • Bright, colorful and intense visuals.
  • Controls that vary from simple exploration to multiple simultaneous effects making.
  • A control board showing what controls are available at all time.

Hoverboy was developed in part as a creative output and practical case study for a Master's research on the idea of experimentation in video games. The resulting thesis, titled L’expérimentation vidéoludique théorisée en arts, en sciences et en design, et pratiquée dans la création de l'album musical vidéoludique Hoverboy, is available online for free (in french only).

This game is entirely free. If, however, you would like to support the developer, you may do so by purchasing one of the DLCs (they do not add any content within the game!).

"Hoverboy" is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this software. Instead of being a game, "Hoverboy" is a software application that presents a garbage music video for what might be the worst attempt at "music" ever made. It's not a game, cannot be played as a game, all you do is unplug your headphones as fast as you can and turn off your monitor to make the garbage assault on your senses stop. This is the result of art school dropouts being handed restraining orders from every art gallery in the city, thus resorting to dumping their garbage onto Steam Direct as if it's a game. Ugh. Why do we have to suffer for this? For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increases the players score if any rows were completed, then gives the gamer another block to position. Counter-Strike has a game loop where a player seeks another player, tests their…

This was less like a game and more like a visual experience thingy. I won't lie, I may genuinely be like a sleeper agent or something after playing
