Hyper Fighter
"Warning! A new shoot'emup is approaching fast!" and it's pretty damn good! HyperFighter Boost Mode ON is a surprising new offering in the always popular genre that has withstood the tests of time, and everything about it from its crisp modern visuals and surreal futuristic style to its lightning paced dodging action is a breath of fresh air to the genre. This is a shoot'emup that deserves some attention from veterans and newcomers alike.
Gameplay
What sets Hyper Fighter apart from any old run-of-the-mill horizontal shoot'emup is its slick and quick dodge mechanic. Lining up rows of enemy fleets for that Gradius-style line wiping score bonus feels much more involved and lightning fast here, as with the tap of the A button you can quickly boost in any given direction. This gives you full control of your positioning and makes not only dodging much more engaging, but creates a much more tactical situation for lining up shots and taking down entire fleets. Throughout the stages you'll be frantically grabbing for tokens, either from fallen enemies or rescuing other stranded ships on your path. These can be used for purchasing all forms of extr…

Unfortunately, Hyper Fighter does very little to stand out from the crowd, with most elements feeling uninspired and derivative. The visuals don’t impressive, but they are stylish and sometimes pretty, and is the greatest aspect of the game. Unfortunately, there’s numerous major issues that completely hindered my enjoyment. The sounds are severely lacking in quality which is noticeable when a barrage of enemy bullets causes the entire game audio to stutter and distort. The gameplay itself I found to be boring, due to a lack of enemy variety and meaningful powerups, and every playable ship feels much too the same.
Components
Visuals - The visual style of Hyper Fighter is pretty cool. It’s 3D lowpoly, which I’ve got to say is unique for a shmup. There’s lots of fancy particle effects, and luckily they aren’t…

It’s a treat to see a good looking polygonal shmup. The PS1 and Dreamcast days were promises of the future with games like Einhander, Mars Matrix, Ikaruga and Triggerheart Excelica. Alas, the shmup genre fell out of favor with the mainstream, and as it became more niche it also became more 2D. Maybe this was a result of devs needing to eek out better performance as it swamped the player with projectiles in the bullet hell sub-genre. Whatever the case, games like Gradius V, with impressive 3D graphics, became the exception. Now with indie developers entering the fold, along with the democratization of high end engines, we get treats like PAWARUMI and the game in question, Hyper Fighter Boost Mode ON. Hyper Fighter is a beautiful horizontal shmup and with progression being a core design tenant, it feels straight out of the Gradius family tree. It starts out fairly bland as your only weapon is pretty low key. But after the first level, you’ve received enough tokens to buy some sweet gear including upgrades or secondary weapons. An upgrade could boost your shot power or cause the in-game drops to be pulled towards you. Early weapons include homing missiles and a shooting sphere that o…
