[h3] I'm currently doing a challenge to play through a free game in every single category on steam. I then give an honest review using ChatGPT. [/h3] Game: 46 / 447 [b] Category: 1990's [/b] "A Pitfall Clone That Falls Flat" This game is a clear attempt at recreating the charm of Pitfall, but it misses the mark entirely. The controls are unresponsive and clunky, making even basic platforming a chore. The graphics are expectedly bad for a retro-style game, but the real offender is the grating soundtrack that quickly wears thin—though, oddly enough, the jump sound is the most enjoyable part of the experience. The difficulty is laughably frustrating. On "easy," you’ll die to spikes. On "hard," you’ll die to spikes faster. There’s a “continue (easy mode)” option, but don’t let that fool you—you still start from the very beginning every time you die. It feels less like a finished game and more like someone’s unfinished class project. Avoid unless you're nostalgic for frustration.

"Jungle Jim" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This garbage pixelcrap puzzle platformer is actually a GDevelop/GameMaker browser game that's also been dumped on Steam for no reason that I can see apart from a deliberate intention to make Steam worse. It's a basic Pitfall ripoff, control an Indiana Jones guy in some of the worst platforming ever made. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. For gameplay purposes, because the user interface for this game is mostly just 2D static text/images... it might as well be a web page. It's functionally no different from a browser game. And we all know, Steam isn't here to compete with Chrome and Firefox. If the game can be done in a web browser, it's just not rich or compelling enough to …

You hop into a brand new world, the wild unexplored land is full of traps and monsters but have no fear YOU'RE JUNGLE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ JIM, you're a bad ass explorer who can jump and... jump and I mean sometimes you plant bombs so you can live out your fantasy of being a jungle terrorist while you fail the same jump fifty times. When you decide to take another route you might find yourself enjoying the game and feeling accomplished, you will begin to say "DAMN I AM ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ JUNGLE JIM" and then your faced with the same jump that you died on last time and with a false sense of confidence you take the leap of faith... you die and you have to start from the beginning. 8/10 I want to make love with bootleg indiana jones.

I think it's a pretty neat platformer, it's nothing innovative but it isn't trying to be. It can be a bit punishing which is part of the fun imo, and the controls were much more responsive than I was anticipating. Also I really love the sliding lol, introducing it in the tutorial was a neat way to showcase the mechanic. As far as free games go, this is worth a try if you like this style of retro game.
