KING of HOLO caught my eye due to the deckbuilder aspect, but what drew me in was the interesting twist on shogi. While this is a Hololive game, that's merely an aesthetic and you do not need to have any knowledge of the cast to enjoy it. While shogi isn't super popular here in the West, chess is at least well known. I imagine most people who have played chess have at some point thought about deploying captured pieces for their own use. That's shogi. KING of HOLO then shakes things up by having players start with an empty board and a bunch of deployable units. Not having a bunch of pawns in the way speeds things up considerably. The game also limits the starting deployable zone which keeps things from getting too fast and also prevents games from being entirely focused on a series of end-game drop attacks. You can extend your drop zone, but you have to earn it by destroying your opponent's units. This zone also doubles as the promotion range for the opponent, so pushing too far can actually backfire. Unlike chess and shogi, units in KING of HOLO have stats. The potential for a unit to survive being hit simply adds to game's depth. Just as a rook is blatantly better than a lan…4 found this helpful
KING of HOLO is a surprisingly deep tactical roguelike that successfully combines strategy RPG mechanics, deckbuilding systems, and Hololive fanservice into an experience that feels far more ambitious than many players might initially expect. Developed by テイク and published through the holo Indie label, the game transforms a massive roster of Hololive talents into tactical units fighting across chess-inspired battlefields where positioning, resource management, and long-term planning become essential for survival. While the game is clearly built with Hololive fans in mind, its gameplay systems are strong enough to stand on their own as a genuinely entertaining strategy experience even for players unfamiliar with the franchise. At the center of the experience is a turn-based combat system heavily inspired by board games and tactical RPGs. Players choose a Hololive member to act as the “King” before gradually assembling a team during each roguelike run. Battles unfold across grid-based arenas where movement and positioning matter just as much as direct attacks. The game’s structure remains relatively easy to understand on the surface, but encounters quickly become more strategic once…3 found this helpful
This is what a chess/shogi rougelike is supposed to be Oh, and this one's also made in Wolf RPG Editor2 found this helpful
It's Shogi, but I actually understand how the game works. Also you can have your oshi be the king of your Shogi pieces and fight all the other holomems with her. :)1 found this helpful
