Story

Gensokyo faces sudden disturbance as 「Scarlet Mist」 spreads once again.
To Reimu Hakurei, this peculiar phenomenon resembled something familiar.

'Is this that vampire's doing?', she thought to herself.

There was only one choice: head to the Scarlet Devil Mansion,
and find out the true cause of the disturbance.

......but this time, the way to the mansion was a little different from usual.

Features

Colorful dialogues between Touhou characters
The player becomes Reimu Hakurei and sets out to find the true cause of the Scarlet Mist. On the way to the Scarlet Devil Mansion, they will interact with various Touhou characters in a number of intense danmaku(bullet hell) battles.

Reimu's Weapons
The player will fight their way to the cause of the disturbance using the right weapons in the right situations. Reimu has "Purification Wand" for close combat, and "Ofuda" for attacking flying enemies. She herself can fly, too.

Marisa and Cirno join the party!
Marisa Kirisame and Cirno join Reimu in her adventure, supporting her with their own partner attacks. The player can summon them at the cost of Souls. To lead the battle to victory, they need to decide carefully when to call for the partner's help.

Survive the Touhou-style bullet hell!
Playing as Reimu Hakurei, the player will encounter and fight Touhou characters such as Hong Meiling, Sakuya Izayoi, and Alice Margatroid. The residents of the Scarlet Devil Mansion will corner the player with fierce patterns.

And behind all of them stands the vampire Reimu is looking for……!

Here comes Suika Ibuki as the new partner!
Suika Ibuki, the "oni" that loves party and drinking, waits for Reimu in the Scarlet Devil Castle. In this version, she joins Reimu as her third partner! Use her unique partner skill to attack enemies at the cost of Souls.

Extra easy mode
"Extra easy mode" is available for gamers who are not familiar with the action and shooting games. This mode can be selected at the options.

Compared to the original version, Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony is full of bonus elements including in-game challenges, BGM collections, and galleries that will satisfy beginners and challenge lovers alike.

The main claim to fame of Koumajou Remilia aka "Touhouvania", long before it was even thought that it would get on Steam (the original version is from 2009), are the superb character designs: "What if Ayami Kojima designed the Touhou cast?" So many years later, those alternate designs of Reimu, Marisa & co. still rock. Funnily enough, before Frontier Aja themselves gave a translation through a patch back then, it was thought to be possibly darker than the source material but once confronted with the actual dialogue, it's not the case. Even Remilia's doomsday plan is resolved with a slap on the wrist. When it comes to the actual game, however, there is much less to be enthusiastic about. It feels like the developers, wanting to mix Touhou with classic Castlevania, didn't have a clear idea of how to do it, resulting in a superficial implementation of aspects from both franchises. Therefore you got Reimu who has very floaty jumps and whose flying, while useful at times, isn't exactly great to control as she can't even change the direction she faces during flight, on top of allowing to easily skip many obstacles. The level design is bland, with several room…

This game is insanely conflicting to me. It's like the original stage based Castlevania games, which is awesome. But at the same time the game really wants to be Touhou, the problem with that is if you want to have it be Touhou it cannot be Castlevania because you can't move to dodge all the bullet hell and attack at the same time. So you are either having to dodge and not attack or take a bunch of hits to the face while doing damage. Which is another problem because the invulnerability when you get hit is nonexistent so you will be taking two hits from the same one attack most times. You learn how the use mechanics in the first stage, like the flying, and the game immediately deincentivises you in using it by having an enemy offscreen at the top of the stage that does a third of your life per hit as well. It's a fun game and I can see the vision but the game isn't sure what it wants to be when you go to fight the bosses and it isn't worth the price it is at for two hours of game. If it's on sale for like five bucks, give it a try but otherwise play Luna Nights if you want a Touhou Castlevania fix. I'd rate this game 5/10, it's the most middle of the road it can be in both directio…

Unfortunately, this is not the Metroidvania for me. I would prefer more like Touhou: Luna Nights. Though if you like a Castlevania a lot this may be great. Glad I got this on sale.

Boy oh boy, where do i even start? Atrocious level designs, specifically with the tiny ass rooms in most boss fights. Boss attacks genuienly being undodgeable, especially Patchouli. Ass controls, those damn books with its danmakus phasing trough infinite walls. Some enemies being so small that you cant even hit them, and more. If Touhou Luna Nights had an unloved child, itd be this one, without a doubt. Such a shame that really good character designs and an actual good concept was wasted for something this bad.
