KUNAI

A fun not-too-long Metroidvania with snappy combat and platforming. Wish it had more QoL in terms of fast travel (i.e. there is none). But overall, I found KUNAI to be above average in quality.

I liked it, was fun. The most impressive aspect of this game is the usage of colors. Combining pastel colors with bright red creates awesome readability in the game's combat while creating a beautiful experience. I also love how light from the character blends with light sources from the world and also lots of particles in explosions or enemy kills. This game is a visual masterpiece, the art director deserves a medal. The gameplay is pretty slick, the Kunai mechanics are fresh and work pretty well, while the weapons are fun to use. The Rocket Launcher is basically a one-button kill-all, and the game becomes a bit trivial after having it. Also, it's not that hard as people are saying in other reviews, the last level and last boss were the only challenge, and it was pretty manageable anyway. The story could be a bit more fleshed out than rogue AI kills mankind, for the 100th time and then... But it's ok. I wouldn't complain if it was a bit longer too, I was definitely not bored by the end. Kunai was a surprise, considering the reviews. Pros: -A metrovania that makes you use of all the tools you got like the kunai for climbing walls, shurikens for stunning enemies and opening doors, SMGs for hovering and a rocket launcher for blowing up rocks. -Like the muted, retro look has while still giving each area a distinct look and colour and that friend and foe can be seen with them being red or blue. -Bosses are pretty good, each requiring different skills to take down. Except for the final boss which felt underwhelming despite how hard it can be. -While he is a silent protagonist, Tabby is very expressive from his default smiley face to his determined snarl as he fights makes him a charming little tablet Neutral: -I’ll be honest, I don’t know what the war was about. was it the usual robot apocalypse with humans fighting robots? Is it robot vs robot like in Metal Arms? is it cyborg vs robot? I don’t know. And if some of the blue robots turned out to be human, they did a bad job of establishing it. -The hats you can find. They're just there. -Also a bit disappointed there is no boss that makes you use the rocket launcher. Cons: -On Steam Deck, the cutscenes are skipping and freezing and feels like the game …

Kunai is one of those rare games that feels made by players for players. Combat is fast and satisfying, every parry and dash actually matters. Platforming is precise, level design is clever, and the pixel art plus the soundtrack gives the whole thing a surprising amount of heart. It’s short but packed with moments that make you want to replay sections and shave seconds off your best runs. If you like tight controls, smart enemy design, and a game that respects your skill, this is a steal.
