About Lamplight City

✦ AI summary

Solve five interconnected murder cases as a morally gray detective in a steampunk noir city, where your methods and choices permanently shape the story and characters' opinions of you. Navigate a richly voiced 19th-century world inspired by Poe and Dickens, where cases adapt to your decisions and no playthrough is ever truly stuck.

The Gateway to Vespuccia, the City of Air and Light, Lamplight City - the thriving port city of New Bretagne is a beacon of progress and industrial advancement in the New World. Yet beneath the promises of a shining 19th-century future, the city rests upon foundations of poverty, class struggle, and crime.

For police detective turned private investigator Miles Fordham, Lamplight City's shadowy corners are just part of the territory. But with his former partner constantly speaking to him from beyond the grave, his grip on sanity is slowly loosening. Can Miles find justice for his clients and track down his partner's killer before his entire world comes apart?
  • Be the detective you want to be. But prepare to face the consequences.

Gather clues and documents in your casebook for review. Item manipulation is handled via a context-sensitive cursor.
  • A fictional city with four boroughs to explore, each with their own unique flavor.
Players will visit each of these boroughs throughout the game, exploring themes such as class divide and the public's fear of emerging steam tech.

  • Meet over 50 professionally voiced characters.
  • Original score by Mark Benis

Be haunted, solve murders, fight against new tech that's putting people pot of their jobs. Yes.

I found the writing too distracting to enjoy the game. I think this may have been a case of some talented people getting together to make a game and for some reason allowing a social "activist" to write it, which unfortunately is too often the case but I guess isn't surprising considering when this was released. Within the first half an hour, you're confronted with commentary on racism, misogyny and homophobia in very "on the nose" ways that feels inorganic and like someone is ticking checkboxes. Not what I'm looking for when trying to relax and enjoy a simple point and click game.

I enjoy mystery games, and the world-building in this one is enjoyable. There are a few too many ways to soft-lock yourself out of solving cases, so I had to restart from scratch more often than I'd have wished to. The cases do, however, more or less proceed on rails, and given the nature of your relationship with the main character's wife, I wish there had been more freedom of choice about "go to the bar" or "don't go to the bar," etc. Still, an enjoyable game, worth picking up on sale.

Neat little who-dun-it, story is well written. not really your classic adventure game, more of an interactive story. it has a few dead ends if you're not paying attention and following all the leads. some of your actions have some effect on the narrative. Was a good story, gameplay is approximately 8-10 hours, none of the puzzle are illogical or difficult,

So, this is less a mystery or detective game as much as it is a visual novel with some pixel manipulation elements. It starts strong, and the metaplot is engaging and very fully realized for the first three cases of the game. I wanted to finish it, and I felt very good playing the game, but the ending or really the last third felt rushed and inconsistent. The grand finale or confrontation, avoiding spoilers is decidedly anticlimactic and leaves much to be desired. Yes, you will understand some of the motives very well, and some of them will remain absolutely obscure even with a guide. I enjoyed the thorough detail in programming, and the careful course correction and opportunities if for whatever reason you remain unable to solve a given mystery. I will say that the game sometimes did not realize when you had completed certain tasks, making your objective list slightly untrustworthy. I will say also that one of the cases involves a pixel hunting nightmare on a gothically dark screen, and even though thimbleweed Park made that an era defining joke, it's not fun when you encounter it in real time. The voice acting and backgrounds were phenomenal, as was the soundtrack. I think we are…

High quality game. Focuses more on story than puzzles. Excellent word building an voice acting.
