Liminalcore

This game has a lot of interesting ideas for settings and a few parts look quite visually appealing, but it needs a few performance/gameplay optimizations (winding halways while walking, a few bigger ballpits and lighting), more explorable levels and especially focus. If this game wants to have a storyline in the subtext, then a lot more of the level design should reflect either the personality or experiences of the main character. There are a few attempts at symbolism, but a lot of them seem disjointed. Some screaming, some whispering and a handful of assets which seem to hold more meaning, but either lack the necessary context or are too vague (leviathan). I could not piece together a coherent storyline, with the only ecxeption being the ending, which seemed like the most likely one just going of the screams and the daisy soundtrack. Regarding the exploration-issue it´s a shame that a lot of levels look like they would have more paths only for most of them to be shrouded in darkness, with available paths often noticably converging soon after. Also a faster walking/running speed would make some of the chapters feel less like a drag. All in all it´s servicable, but nothing reall…

For a game with no enemies I was still on edge from the environment. It has moments where sounds or unexpected forms (similar to the hand in the photos, I won’t spoil anything more) make you question if you are truly alone. It even has a creepy ending chapter I never expected from a liminal spaces game that ties together the things that had been driving fear into me all along.

I do enjoy these short little surrealist backrooms types of games that don't have entities or enemies, you can enjoy the unsettling settings and soundscapes as a bit of playable art.

This game had terrible optimization. OBS battled with this game at every corner to get a consistent frame rate. Take a look on YouTube and you'll find just about every video on there running major stuttering or disgusting FPS drops. Why else would i have 20 hours in a 4 hour game? Not because i love going down slides that much... Even when testing with OBS off, i found many areas that had lag spikes or major jumps in CPU/GPU usage. I Enjoyed the liminal spaces it offered nonetheless.

Liminalcore is an incredible experience. I absolutely love The Lost Room and the eerie atmosphere this game creates. The music, the environments, and the overall feeling of being somewhere familiar yet completely unsettling are something else. This is definitely a game you have to experience for yourself. Go in without knowing too much, explore, take your time, and let the atmosphere sink in. It’s one of those games that’s hard to fully explain, you just have to play it. Highly recommend! 👏
