Maze (2025)

I went into Maze expecting a pretty simple little arcade challenge, and that is basically what I got. It is a short game built around moving through a series of rooms while trying to reach the end without getting caught by lasers. It does not waste much time with story or complicated systems, so the focus is almost entirely on movement, timing and figuring out how each room works. I actually liked how quickly it gets going because there is very little getting in the way of the main idea. The maze sections are the best part for me. A lot of the challenge comes from watching the laser patterns and working out when it is safe to move. Some rooms require more careful timing while others test how quickly I can react. I liked that the challenges are fairly small because it gives each section a clear goal without making me feel like I am stuck in the same puzzle for ages. There is a nice feeling when I finally make it through a room that had been catching me out. The movement also gives the game a bit more energy than I expected. I don't mind no options page or UI like others are asking for, but at the bare minimum, this game NEEDS a pause button. I had to step away unexpectedly while playing and there was just no way to get the timer to stop running. That said, I still had an absolute blast with this. It's juuust hard enough to be boring but not so hard you get frustrated. The dash sequence music is amazingly catchy and it was hard to get mad about having to try again when I had that beat going. I cackled at my own stupidity vs the cleverness of the lasers a few times (like when they reverse direction and I was standing there like an idiot); in a way it's nearly slapstick. Strongly calls to mind the best of the old flash games on Newgrounds in the late 90s and 00s. Not counting the time I had to step away, one run took me just over half an hour, so it's a quick fun jaunt that risks becoming quite addictive to those who enjoy whittling down their runtimes.

This game is the perfect combination of frantic and relaxed. Hard enough to require focus, but not so hard that it becomes stressful. Each level is the perfect length to be a challenge without feeling like you have a lot of progress to lose. However, the controls for this game are very frustrating, at least on keyboard. The best way to play is to constantly tap move commands instead of holding down keys. If you hold down a movement key for a second and then start holding another direction in addition, your character will only move in the new direction slightly. The only way to move perfectly diagonally is to tap two directions simultaneously. There is no menu and very little UI. I'm a big fan of that choice, however you cannot adjust volume or even quit the game without using the windows key to bring up the taskbar so you can close the window. The game looks 3D, but is actually 2D. That creates some issues with hitboxes not working the way you would expect. Your character's hitbox is only the shadow below them, and the walls look bigger than they actually are on the edges of the circle.
