Mech Merc Company

I usually prefer Armored Core-style games but this is a pretty good and fun Mechwarrior-like, it's a shame that development ended but hey, it's free

I spent about a week trying to get MW2 Mercenaries running on my steam deck and eventually got it running pretty well and without a ton of bugs. I have played probably 30 to 40 hours of the original MW2 Mercs on DosBox. I really wish I had known about this project instead, I could have saved a lot of time messing around. This game does everything the original MW2 Mercs does and it is fantastic! Runs like a dream on the steam deck out of the box, controls are easy to map, the view distance isn't 300 meters like in the Dos version of MW2. There are a few things the original game does better, namely the sounds and voice acting which is understandable because it was a full team creating a big budget game, this just isn't that but it does so much of what the original MW2 game does but better and much easier for the average person to get into! I honestly think that once this project has a little bit more mission variety, some UI work, and some refinement on the music and voice acting, there will be virtually no reason to return to the legendary MW2 Mercs over this incredible game

Mech Merc Company is the kind of game that immediately appealed to me because it feels like a forgotten nineties mech simulator that somehow ended up on Steam for free. The main idea is that I run my own mercenary company while also getting into the cockpit and fighting in massive combat mechs. I can take contracts, earn money, manage my company and decide how I want to build up my collection of machines. It is a pretty unusual combination, and I liked that the management side actually supports the mech combat instead of feeling like a completely separate game. The mech combat is the main reason I kept playing. The machines feel heavy and powerful, and I can customize them with different weapons and equipment before taking them into missions. There are plenty of different mechs to experiment with, so I can gradually figure out which setups work best for the way I like to play. I enjoyed the feeling of preparing a machine before a contract and then actually seeing whether my choices worked once I was on the battlefield. The mercenary management side adds another layer that I really liked. I am not simply unlocking a new mech and immediately moving on. I have to think about money, …

Needs more updates for sure before it can “be a mechwarrior killer game” but its very good and getting closer slowly i do also have a couple suggestions as well

It's very rough around the edges, in UI look, feel, and navigation including inventory and mission management. Mech movement and aiming feels disconnected from the mech, without enough weight, inertia, or smoothing. Could use multiplayer. Would give it more replay value even despite those things.

11/10 very fun.
