About Mech Engineer

Mech Engineer is a mech lover’s dream come true: you will oversee every aspect of your squad's operation, from optimizing the reactors to fine-tuning weapons systems. Carefully tweak and balance each mech's weight, energy, and heat systems to maximize efficiency.

The skills and emotional state of each pilot also play an important role, along with the effective management of your base and resources. You will deploy your finely calibrated and tuned machines onto missions, where your decisions during semi-auto battles (with active pause) against a mutating alien bio-weapon will mean life or death.

First, start assembling your mechs

You start with the reactor: increase its power output by selecting pistons and injectors, while adding auxiliary components to keep the core temperature down. Consider all the factors, like the temperature of the environment you will deploying in; overheating can lead to a shutdown in the middle of a battle, not ideal.

Second, prepare your weapons

Customize your weapons and test them in the simulator: rate of fire, weight, energy consumption, accuracy, and firepower. Consider the enemies you will encounter and how fast you will be expending ammunition.

Third, finalize your mechs

Weight and available energy are the main concerns when assembling your machines; strategize and carefully consider the trade-offs relative to enemies and the terrain.

Fourth, choose your pilots

Even the most effective combat machine will perform poorly if the pilot is not skilled enough or sufficiently rested. Stress is a killer as much as those nasty bugs.

Fifth, combat time!

Give your brave pilots a position or attack orders and watch them try to survive performing it.
Explore the ruins of the destroyed world, avoiding enemy bases and dangerous monsters, to find all the shuttle parts and leave the Earth.

250 hours played. Incredibly rewarding game. Steady tech progression, very deep mech building, a large variety of tactics situations, resources management, colony survival, and most rewarding for me was a game ending that felt real. This game is an absolute gem. It is easy to criticize the UI design. It is built with the games mood and the feel of the inside of a mech in mind, it feels. The game does provide the resources necessary to be understood, however, and for me it was part of the challenge. Some of these are the simplest visual clues like a sparking wire that leads your eye to a new menu opened up by a bit of tech. Trust the environment and the combat simulators!!! If you don't like challenges or the puzzle of a surviving a world you are thrown that you must study and learn to survive, then stay far away.

Very unforgiving and slightly obtuse in the way games were in the 90's. A must-play if you love mechs and a challenge.

Overwhelming, spent hours trying to build a mech for underwater. Made my research, save scam a few times, but in the end, I still got my butt kicked. Not fun. Not worth it. Unbalanced. I'll try again, but not really eager to.

You ever watch a movie that you love a ton but you realize you've gotta be REALLY selective about who you recommend it to? Yeah neither have I. Anyways. You should play Mech Engineer. A strategic layer with enough decisions to stop your racing thoughts. A tactical layer with enough moving parts to keep you from getting too comfortable. A user interface designed by, and for, the deranged or the perverse. I'm both. Took me like five minutes just to figure out how to start a mission. It reminds me of trying to figure out the original 1994 XCOM that I didn't have a manual for, in a good way. The interfaces are difficult to get a handle on at first but ohhhh I love the switches and buttons gimme weirdo UIs over perfectly smooth frictionless UIs any day of the week. It's so awesome (annoying). It kind of sucks (affectionate). There's a few things I wish took fewer steps to do, but honestly with way everything is about this game it feels less like I'd be directing feedback at the developer and more like I'm complaining about whoever in-setting was responsible for building the machinery. Not to lean on the necessarily reductive comparisons, but there really is a cross section of appea…

Fun game with a somewhat organic doomsday clock aspect. I did find the time pressure to be a little annoying, as you are rushed along by the time you get the largest mechs. The flexibility in loadout was good for weapons, ok for armor, and limited for ancillary. Certainly some unavoidable tradeoffs you have to make to get an optimal enough deployment to succeed. The cave / base system was cool, although by the time you can survive it the resources weren't all that necessary. The largest limit was always the construction queue in relation to the doomsday limitation. Overall a fun game, with mod support to allow you to take on larger challenges.

I love this game. I suck at it, but I love it.
