About Melody
Melody is a musical VR experience in which the user plays the African / Central American instrument: marimba, in different environments; merging creativity with the presence of VR simulation. A low latency audio engine allows for players to experience very little lag and jitter in their audio experience. We focused on creating a simulation instrument that is both expressive and realistic.
Like with the physical instrument, players can play with a combination of soft and hard mallets and currently the experiences supports play with up to 4 mallets (two per hand). There are also other features common to a musical workstation including a metronome, 4 track recording / playback, velocity and resonance sensitivity in the keys.
There are currently 3 levels to choose from. The Enchanted Forest is a fanciful forest scene where musical play generates excitement in the wildlife and the trees. The Practice Room is a true-to-life music room that serves a great sterile environment where one can focus and hone their skills. Lastly, The Tron Room is a futuristic environment that makes for a dynamic performance arena.

I never thought I would be playing the Marimba. I have no experience playing this instrument and have very limited musical knowledge (I play guitar, using Rocksmith and tabs). I also have a very limited knowledge of reading musical notation. However, even with my limited musical training/experience, this app is just amazing and inspiring. I had a lot of fun just playing around with the Marimba in VR. I didn't notice any latency/lag issuees, double hits, or sensitivity problems Note: I played this on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers and the controllers played fine (grab buttons are for volume, trigger to add a 2nd mallet, Y or B to go to main menu and choose different environments). I loved recording myself and then hearing the midi file once I exited the game. Amazingly, it actually didn't sound half bad if I don't say so myself. There's 3 different environments and they all bring a little something different to the table. I think you start off in the Enchanted Forest. It's a very nice environment to play in, just seeing the VR world around you makes playing the Marimba all that more enjoyeable and relaxing. However, I think you should start in the prac…6 found this helpful
This was amazing to play. I loved playing the marimba back in high school and this game brought all of those happy memories back! Playing this felt like I was back in the high school band room playing away. While playing I did find it annoying how the menu button hint kept poping up every 5 min. I also saw the store page says vive only but, it runs just fine on oculus. One feature I would love to see is a way to view sheet music in the VR space. Overall I give this game 4 VR mallets up!3 found this helpful
It seems to be ok. You play and record your tracks with a marimba and that's about it. Regarding accesibility, for obvious reasons you can't play this one handed (I mean, you can, but there isn't much fun). You can barely play sitting down. VR accessibility score ----------------------- One-handed = 0/10 Wheelchair = 2/102 found this helpful
I’m right on the fence on this one. On one hand, it runs smooth, looks good in a cartoony way, is responsive, and has some neat features like recording your song, metronome, etc. On the other hand, it just doesn’t really engage me or get me interested. Perhaps it’s my lack of interest in marimbas in general, whether they are virtual or IRL. Hmm. Well, in the end, it’s not BAD, it’s just not my cup of tea. I got it in a bundle, and I’d suggest getting it on sale, only if you’re into marimbas or think your kids might get some fun out of it. I’ll give it Thumbs: UP!1 found this helpful
Melody is awesome! A gorgeous colorful environment with a responsive Marimba setup, great fun for kids and adults. Really impressed with the ergonomic and accessibility tweaks the dev made to ensure it's comfortably playable for all.1 found this helpful
