Melon (2024)

A very, very amazing game. There is an unbelievable amount of things to do. Probably one of my favorite games of all time. I love the part where you click the melon, and also the part where you click the settings button. As a game dev, I can definetly see that the developer put TONS of work into this. Amazing.

Melon is about as simple as a game can get. I am given a melon and the main thing I can do is click it. That is basically the whole idea, but there is a little more going on once I leave it running and start waiting for different melon drops. Common melons appear every few hours, while uncommon ones take longer and can have a chance of being something more special. It is a very strange little idle game, but I think the simplicity is part of what makes it work. The clicking itself is not particularly interesting, and I would not pretend that it is. There is no combat, proper story, exploration or complicated progression for me to get involved with. I click the melon and then wait. What makes it slightly more appealing is the collection side because I have a reason to check back later and see what has appeared. It feels more like a tiny desktop activity than something I would sit down and play for a long session. I also like how deliberately silly the whole thing is. The game does not try to hide the fact that the main activity is clicking a melon. There is something amusing about how little I actually have to do, especially when the game starts treating different melon drops as so…
