I dreaded that it'd turn out to be a lame, played out LGBT allegory instead of a horror, but it turned out to either be neither, or i'm not high enough to 'get it'... and my drug of choice works better with Baudelaire than surface-level understandings of Kafka.

Metamorph is an unsettling and unusually intimate indie narrative that blends coming-of-age drama, psychological horror, and dating-sim conventions into a single, deliberately uncomfortable experience. Developed by Jackdaw Games and published by CULT Games, the title immediately establishes itself as something more personal than a typical horror game, using grotesque transformation not as a shock gimmick but as a lens through which to explore insecurity, isolation, and the anxiety of adolescence. You play as a teenage girl whose body is slowly mutating into something insect-like, and the game places as much emphasis on how this transformation feels internally as on how it looks externally. Rather than focusing on survival or combat, the experience is rooted in emotional tension, asking the player to live inside the protagonist’s discomfort as she struggles to maintain a sense of normalcy while her sense of self erodes. The narrative unfolds over a series of days, each one bringing the protagonist closer to an unavoidable physical and psychological breaking point. the writing is decent, the concept is good, the art is good, the game mechanics (when one is in third-person-navigation mode) work well but the actual visual-novel-interface needs a bit more polish. That being said, it might be negatively effected by the fact that i'm using a set-up with an ultrawide HD monitor and that might be messing with visual-novel-interface layout. Furthermore, there is no option to minimize the dialogue so that one can see the lovely background art (which is a shame). There are also some cool images when one is transitioning from one scene to the next, but if you blink - you'll miss them as they only appear on the screen for about a second. I think with the right amount of care and polish this could be a really great piece of interactive fiction. p.s. don't let my 7+hr playtime fool you - i forgot i had left the game on when i went to work. in reality, i have about an hour of actual gameplay...if that.

The game is super interesting. I like what I have played so far. That said, I can't get it to run properly. Everytime I enter the school on Day 2, it crashes! If these crashes could be fixed (the game could save what I did on that day), I'd recommend it!

Maybe I should read Metamorphosis.
