Mudborne is being created by ellraiser, one half of the indie-dev studio, TNgineers. A spiritual successor of sorts to APICO, Mudborne instead focuses on genetic manipulation and generational puzzles to create and discover all sorts of frog species, with experimentation being encouraged.
It originally started as a gamejam entry for FletchFest 2023, with the theme of ‘pond’. Ell had always joked about ‘what if APICO but frog?’ before, and this seemed a perfect opportunity to play with the concept and how to take things in a new direction.

A portion of the money made will be donated towards national and international amphibian, wetlands, and environmental charities to help keep our little green friends and their homes happy and healthy <3
You can learn more about TNgineer's charitable efforts on the website.

Really wanted to like this game but it is just so convoluted and poorly explained at times. I have no space in my inventory at any given time, the tooltips tell me i need an item to do a thing but it tells me via an image of the item which! I don't have! So i have no clue what it is or how to try to get it. I'm wandering in circles inbetween two different realms where i have to rebuild my base in each one for some reason and then god go back and forth between them both to access my many chests due to the tiny inventory... I have to walk to a trader to get items instead of being able to simply craft them so even more stuff in my inventory for that I keep encountering roadblocks so i go okay i must not be supposed to go here yet but.. they just. keep coming? So i just don't know how to get to all these spaces and i understand it's supposed to be a puzzle but when there's so many different systems all moving together in so many different ways i just end up having no clue if it's a puzzle i *can* solve or if there's something else i need to do first. It's just a bunch of many many QOL issues that all combine together to make it... more frustrating than fun. I encountered a single bu…

Hidden gem of a game, for its price there’s actually a lot to do. The main questline is there to aid you in what is the true goal of the game: breed and collect all possible variations of frogs, which is a delight to do just to see what weird little critter you cook up. You decide the pace, the game never makes you feel rushed. Paired with the lovely soundtrack and background noise it makes for a very chill and relaxing experience where you can waste as much time as you want. As fun as progressing the story is, I spent just as much time (if not more) customizing my little corner of the world. I loved spending hours decorating a home worthy of my little frog children. The accessibility menu also helps streamlining the more lentghy gimmicks that some people might find frustrating. A little buggy, especially on controller, but its charm more than makes up for it. Overall great game to sit and relax in, give it a chance.

Loved this game, 100%-ed it in 38-ish hours. You can definitely play it at a slower pace, I'm just insane and wanted to see the end quickly LOL. I enjoyed it more than Apico (I touched that game for an hour and haven't come back since, but this game is making me want to pick Apico up again LOL), this felt less overwhelming and the quests give you a general idea of what to tackle next, one at a time. Definitely need a guide/wiki if you want to 100% it (I feel like it's possible to do it without looking up hints, but personally I'm not that patient, LOL. I love puzzles when it doesn't frustrate me, and I know when to look for a hint so I won't hate the game), but otherwise you can definitely finish most of it yourself. Ambience sound is so nice! Really loved the frog sounds and the crickets and just all the swamp sounds. Art is also really cute! One gripe I have is [spoiler]I wish the fast travel wasn't so hard to find. Like I wish that the game tells you that there is a fast travel mechanic you can unlock. By the time I found out there was fast travel I was maybe 3-4 achievements away from 100%-ing it... And I only found out there's a fast travel mechanic because I was doing the …

This game has awoken a love of frogs I never knew I had. The variety in the Frog design and purpose are honestly amazing. Mushroom gathering can feel like a slog, but for the frog opportunities it’s worth it. Currently finishing finding all the variants and I am both so exited to finish the game and sad it will be over. 9.5/10
