RPG Maker strikes again! "Mystic Ruins" is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. This RPG Maker asset flip at least spares us of the cringe of being an fan-fiction about the developers imaginary anime girlfriend (Seriously, I am not kidding, most RPG Maker asset flips are about this). Instead it's just a painfully generic RPG about exploring some lost city, which just involves a lot of badly assembled and badly done RPG Maker asset flip combat. The most entertaining part about this is the developer thought the guys on Itch wouldn't recognise this as just an RPG Maker asset flip (there is cringe here after all), and even worse, genuinely thought people would give him money for an RPG Maker game stamped out in an afternoon with the construction kit. Mystic Ruins is a compact action-adventure built around the appeal of entering a forgotten place and gradually understanding its secrets. Developed and published by Elite Games, it puts players in control of Strade, an explorer sent into an ancient ruined city after previous expeditions failed to return. What initially resembles a straightforward search for treasure soon develops into a broader investigation involving the missing explorers and the mystery surrounding the city's destruction. Rather than relying on elaborate cinematic sequences, the game places exploration and discovery at the center of the experience. One of its strongest qualities is the non-linear structure of the ruins. Players are encouraged to investigate interconnected areas, remember inaccessible passages, and gradually discover how the environment fits together. The game does not constantly push Strade along a single predetermined route, allowing curiosity to become an important part of progression. This is a hidden gem amongst all the RPG Maker games out there. I'm surprised more people haven't found it, especially since it's free! It is not the classic (and typical) JRPG type of RPG Maker game, but instead focuses mainly on clue type puzzles where you have to figure out what to do with everything you find yourself. To facilitate this, the RPG Maker menu system has been completely overhauled, and the few battles are also in real time. PROS: * Puzzles feel rich, varied, and well thought out. They don't all need to be solved to progress. * Clues, items, and solutions are spread non-linearly across the entire dungeon, with multiple things to be investigated in almost every room. I revisited each room multiple times as I got more items/clues and there were several times I found new things in them I had previously missed. * Every map is visually interesting and distinct. I'm normally terrible with navigation, but I didn't get lost once in this game because each map was so distinct. * There is also a well put together story to be uncovered, and two different endings depending on whether you complete everything or not.
