About Mystik Belle
Being a student of mystical arts is hard work, doubly so if you are Belle MacFae - a freshman student at Hagmore School of Magic. The teachers and the staff are mean, her friends are few, and her grades suck. Worst of all – Belle has a tendency to be at exactly the wrong place at exactly the wrongest time. Like tonight, for example, when she stayed up late to practice her fire magic, but instead got framed for upsetting an ancient ritual. And what better way is there to punish an unlucky first-year student, than to charge her with an impossible task on the worst night of the year? Re-create the Walpurgisnacht Brew, or be expelled, and with all manner of spooks taking over the school, expulsion is starting to sound better by the minute.
Inspired by games like Slightly Magic, Puff in Dragonland, and the Dizzy series, Mystik Belle is a hybrid of a classic point-and-click adventure and a modern metroidvania.
You may experience all of the following while playing this game:
- Get hopelessly lost in the massive school building and its surrounding areas.
- Find items and solve inventory puzzles. Or just clog up your pockets with useless junk.
- Interact with other inhabitants of Hagmore. Learn clues, help them out, ruin their day with angry flies.
- Fight through hallways infested by over 60 unique monster types.
- Defeat 8 bosses.
- Learn new magical and not-so-magical abilities.
- Ogle at retina-burningly colorful pixel art.
- Punch Cthulhu in the face.
- PLEASE be advised: Mystik Belle is NOT just a metroidvania - it's a true adventure game. You will not get far without having to solve inventory puzzles or talking to people.
- By default, the game contains some language not suitable for younger kids. A much more kid-friendly E-10 version of the dialogue is included, and can be selected from the options menu.
OSx version of the game doesn't support the Steam features like the overlay, achievements and trading cards. I will look for a way to get this sorted out as soon as I can. You can still get the game's internal achievements which will transfer to your Steam achievements once this is fixed.- I am temporarily unable to update the Mac version of the game due to changes to OSX and introduction of mandatory developer fees. I will resume Mac updates once I have the money to pay Apple their ransom.
- Native Linux version of the game appears to only reliably support the Xbox 360 controller. This is a known issue of all GameMaker Studio games.

Really liked it. Doesn't overstay.1 found this helpful
This is a yes, but only to people who like classic Sierra/Monkey Island style item puzzles AND likes Metroidvanias. If you're not fond of obscure item puzzles and hitting certain dialogue triggers you're not going to have a good time. Visually it looks nice, the sprites are large and animated nicely. There's a good amount of enemy variety and terrain is very detailed, especially outside the school. Sound's fine and music is good if repetitive. Platforming is solid but you are very floaty and move a bit slow until you get a few abilities toward mid-game. Combat is decent, and I do like that even though there's contact damage from enemies to you, you do contact damage back. This damage can sometimes add up and be a very useful thing when you can collect enough healing hearts. That said, some bosses are difficult to tell what hits you and what doesn't, and that leads to a lot of unnecessary damage. Bosses are also very tanky and your thumb will get sore spamming attack on them. There's levels, and your attack strengthens (and at certain thresholds changes) and health increases on each level. If you die, you lose all XP progress toward the next level, so be sure to get your …
FIRST IMPRESIONS (post completion edit already bellow this): It is a VERY competent metroidvania with a female protagonist done right (theres even a bit of humor which reveals why this was possible). The pixel art is on point, the maps are interesting and distinctt, They avoid being pointlessly over bloated like some other examples of the genre (cough cough, Chasm cough cough). The mobility is simple and to the point, it has neither the problems of older games nor the complications of the psycho "everything has to be a souls like" kind of game developer. it ADS to the backtracking aspect of metroidvanias by introducing a puzzle/graphic adventure mechanic to collectibles -the story and the characters are not lifeless, they are endearing, and fun in a cartoonish way. Overall, this game is neither for an adult nor for a child, it is a game for a father to enjoy some (classy) back sit gaming behind his child. --- END OF FIRST REVIEW---- POST COMPLETION: -Two things first: 1-SEE ALWAS AWAKENING (and the other Alwa game)? THIS is how you make an endearing metroidvania about a magic slinging girl 2-i want to say that i forgot to write about the music, this game has ok music, but i …
A fun little mix of a platformer and an old point-and-click adventure. The art, music, characters and story are all quite charming. Some of the puzzles can be a bit obtuse, but nothing too bad. It's on the shorter side but well worth a play through.
Fun puzzle metroidvania that looks like a early 90's Amiga game.
