"NEON STRUCT: Desperation Column" is a badly and insincerely made game jam tech demo, made for one person by one person, and dumped on Steam through Steam Direct, again, not for gamers, but so the developer can feel good about himself. What do you do in the game? Really badly done FPS level shooting with minimalist low effort assets (At least it's not an asset flip? Yet somehow this comes across as worse). Linear level design, linear gameplay, linear graphics... this is bad, real bad. Worse than 1996's Quake, but published on Steam in 2022. This is the kind of thing that makes gaming worse. This is not a sincerely made product, it was made for a game jam, which is a problem. It was done in a constrained period of time; professional game development takes years of effort from teams of talented and qualified people. A "game" slapped together in a weekend by an amateur simply isn't going to have any value for gamers, and that plays out clearly with this shovelware. Also, products created in game jams were never intended for gamers, they exist only to stroke the ego of amateur developers who can't get a real job in the industry. It seems almost absurd to review a game I beat this quickly and on my first try, but here I am. It's a fun little roguelike fps that's not very difficult but has a definite charm. The movement and gunplay feels nice. I'll probably play through it a few more times. For a game jam game, this is really solid.
A super fun quirky FPS, controls smoothly, and is a blast for a short half hour to hour of game play depending on your FPS skills. Surprisingly large number of ways, for you to approach this game which I think is a testament to the designer. I found run and gunning, Stealth, and just plain ole cowardice are all options for completing the game, and you aren't particularly punished for favoring one or the other (AAAs could learn a lesson!)
Raid a megacorp to dissolve it while fighting robots and confronting managers. Just be careful while climbing up the stairs so you don't get ganged up by the camping upper floor robots.
