About Ninja or Die: Shadow of the Sun

Celestial doom. This is the fate that awaits humanity. In Edo, Japan, the great cataclysm has been foreseen by a most unlikely soul — a Master Thief. Your mother.

You are a common pickpocket, transformed by the cataclysm into a lethal Ninja with lightning mobility. The Ramen Seller becomes a Samurai. The Maiko becomes a killer Geisha. Your domain of petty crime becomes a frenzied neon world of shogun castles, magic traps and parachuting assassins. Someone has ensnared you in a loop of chaos… if not to kill you, then to protect you from something worse.

Master violent precision platforming in this fusion of extreme speed and one-button controls that will leave you dead and wanting more.

JUMP TO MOVE, JUMP TO ATTACK
 • Use one button for everything.
 • No walking, no running – just jumping.
 • Eviscerate the enemy by jumping at them.
 • Hold to super-charge your jump and attack harder.
 • Become invincible at the moment of jumping — time it right and dodge even the most brutal attacks.

ONE WRONG MOVE AND IT’S BACK TO THE START
 • Face hellish bosses and assassins equipped with projectiles, magic and agility.
 • Evade sharp drops, deadly poison and other nasty traps.
 • Ramp up your attack power with combo attacks. Just don’t get hit.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR PLAYSTYLE
 • Unlock new playable warriors like the ranged Geisha and destructive Samurai.
 • Wield kunai, shuriken, spears, stones and other armaments both long-ranged and short.
 • Wear armor and scarves to increase your defense.
 • Get special abilities and boosts by finding strange souls and questionable foods.
 • Use scrolls with effects like earthquake, lightning, and enhanced sight.
 • Build up your Village base. Rescue villagers to repair and upgrade useful buildings including the Blacksmith and Back-alley Doctor.

KEEP GOING, KEEP GOING
 • Blaze through a mix of procedurally generated and hand-crafted levels.
 • Die fast but try again faster with instant respawn and permanent upgrades.
 • Ascend the Infinite Watchtower, run the Infinite Corridor, and don’t stop.
 • Fill your Combat Log and thrash your high scores.
 • Replay the game with new challenges, including a stage randomiser.

STYLISH JAPANESE PIXEL ART
Immerse yourself in the nostalgic beauty of vibrant Japanese pixel art that brings the crumbling castles, skeletal forests and folklore characters of the Edo Period to life with brutal elegance.

The jumping is akin to jump king and simply all you do is jump. I didn't have fun with jump king and I didn't have fun with this. The jumping itself is good. It has a solid foundation that has a lot of bad designs and missteps that will hopefully be fixed with time. The music and art are pretty solid for the most part, though the art is too much at times. On the surface level it works, but so much of the game comes off as annoying and unfun. The map design doesn't seem to lend itself to any interesting platforming with much of it just being spamming A. This leads toward the art being overwhelming as the time slow and screen flash happening over and over and over. On top of that jumping near enemies or bosses with any items leads to the screen becoming a cluttered mess. Speaking of messes, the inventory management is very annoying. You have a max amount of items and are continually having to go to menu to select and throw out an item. On top of that to upgrade item slots it is among the most expensive. ON TOP OF THAT pause doesn't actually pause the game and instead slows it down. Then when there is an item you want and can't pick up you have to move away from the item and back to…

Im actually re-doing this review now I've completed the game. GOOD Plays great on steam deck Collecting/rescuing villagers is a great little side quest to rank up the starting village Controls are simple for basic to intermediate level gameplay (great for casual arcade play) Great grinding RPG elements like stockpiling cash by redoing stages to make a ninja of your choice unstoppable. Grinding is easy Story is short and simple. Character design is unique and enjoyable to look at especially the bosses. Hidden characters (which you don't see much in games anymore) You can switch between characters you meet between stages making gameplay a whole lot more interesting and (an IMPORTANT mechanic to explore during more challenging sections). Each character has a gimmick for a contrasting gaming experience Everything in the game works well together to create a very classic Japanese style dungeon crawler. .......................................... BAD (not necessarily bad but should be taken into consideration) There are no checkpoints and about 12-16 stages on average between each boss. Most are short but some like "FIND THE DOOR KEY" can take time. Gameplay is fast but fee…
Please consider following my Curation page. I cover a wide range of genres both paid and unpaid, providing unbiased opinions as well as regular giveaway events.

There isn't much to like here
The game is similar to Jump King or any other game that involves traversal, with the extra feature of being able to do damage to enemies that you touch while leaping. It's not exactly interesting, while the visuals of the game are really nice, the overall game play is not, as it is just straight up boring, especially boss fights which are just so unfun.
Conclusion
Leap around as a ninja, kill monsters and bosses. You can't move, only jump. It's not fun especially with how frustrating the level designs are, this isn't fun. I wasn't expecting to have to play a game with the same sadistic mindset of games like Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy. This game could have been so much more with a bit more focus on level designs that were actually good and rewarding, rather than punishing for no reason other than, you can't move.

This game is... different. Definitely not bad but not kind of confusing in many ways. Once I learned how to use items properly, the difficulty seems very manageable. People compare this to Jump King but it really is a lot less frustrating than that game due to the fact that you have little dots that show your trajectory when jumping. I beat the second level just now and I don't see how people are calling it masochistic in level design. The only part that kinda sucks is getting poisoned a lot but it really doesn't take too much damage and is yet to kill me. The boss fights seem like the highlight and they are unique so far. I will probably update the review once I get further, but I wanted to dispel some of the points made on many of the negative reviews. It's far from being a masterpiece but I give it props for being different.

I'm going to get a refund on this because I can't see myself playing this past what I've already played. So, basically, I tried ignoring the negative reviews on Steam, thinking maybe people had different tastes than I did (maybe) so (maybe) they might be being a bit harsh on the game. Nope. The game's controls are all mapped to one button as the game trailer says. One problem: All movement and combat is also designated to that button. Literally. Wanna move across a map? Hold down a button. Point with your controller stick. Launch at that direction. Wanna attack an enemy with a projectile? Point while MID AIR at the target while you've got a split second WHILE flying after having hit the aforementioned jump button. Nevermind that regular combat is done AUTOMATICALLY (you'll attack enemies just by touching them), which kind of takes the fun out of things...but then again if they kept regular combat in (using the ONE BUTTON configuration) I'm not sure that would be a fun experience. It's a mediocre experience at best already. Anyways, I don't mind highspeed combat, that's my jam. But this is a bit much. I wish the Devs well and hope their next game will be a bit less like this. Hated this game. It looks great but the controls are incredibly bad and the level design is awful.
