Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition

Stamina usage is far too high which makes combat not very fun at all. I wasn't really a fan of the original game, and I knew I probably wouldn't like this. Not even sure why I have it. A bundle maybe. Or maybe it was on a great sale and I hadn't played the first game yet. Answers I'll never have. Despite my playtime I've achieved nothing. I never make it past the starting area because the stamina system sucks so much in the beginning. I'd like to pretend that the combat gets better, but I'll never get there.

This game is peak and if you didn't know well you should know that it is peak. When compared to Nioh 3, you lack deflect, ninja mode, and a bit less customization. Also no open world, but you aren't missing much there in my opinion. Nioh 2 on the other hand is a cheaper game, you get all dlc included, technically more weapons as ninja mode took some away in 3 and reduced their movesets. You also get a yokai system which allows you to use monster abilities, as well as being able to transform into a monster yourself. A quick word on the customization, it is just as much of a dress up dream as nioh 3 is so if you are into that you will not be missing much by going with this instead. I personally believe that Nioh 2 is a much more well rounded experience than 3, but if you are looking for a lower skill floor requirement and a much softer on-boarding experience, go with 3. But in 2's case, once you get it, you will fall into a rabbit hole of systems that for the most part are quite balanced. There are ways to break this balance with the rpg mechanics, but when talking about the pure push and pull of combat, you are getting a very freeform, and nuanced experience that allows for a lot o…

[h3] TL;DR [/h3] Recommend if you like historical Japan as a setting, but [b] only [/b] if you can stomach a souls-like (where a higher difficulty is expected) being made unnecessarily frustrating by complex combat mechanics and controls, in addition to the camera as an additional enemy. [h1] Why I would recommend this game [/h1] Great game in principle - so many weapons and skills, amazing theme with people and yokai living together instead of the typical boring, dead, and demon-overrun hellscape we all are used to from the souls-like genre. Believe it or not - it actually has a story. The builds feel meaningful, I can be a tanky samurai or kunai-throwing ninja. Being able to switch and learn new weapons so easily is great - haven't seen this anywhere else so far! Ability to respec, though for a price, is always welcome, same for the build-in transmog system available, also for a price in in-game gold. Although acquiring gold is only a matter of grinding, which makes having to pay unnecessary. Runs great on my system in 1440p, though with the help of DLSS. This is my second copy of Nioh 2, having played both the original and it on the PS4 since launch. To say I've logged countless hours between their base games and DLCs is an understatement. The gameplay, story, characters, environment, depiction of Japanese mythos and history are all absolutely phenomenal. For me, Nioh 2 will always be the pinnacle of the Soulslike genre, and is one of the few games that remains installed no matter the platform. The updated steam version? Just made it better. It's visually exquisite and even smoother with the updated framerate.
