Filler: The Platformer. This is dreadful. You will fall asleep before finishing the first level.
Roam the desolate wastelands of platforming hell in Nostalgiarian, a wanna-be game that is as confusing as its made up title. Hop platforms, strike down all of three enemies, and pick up powerups that do seemingly little. There are no collectibles, rewards, or story to speak of, resulting in an experience that will make you nostalgic for other, better games.
Having played many of these "budget" platformers, Nostalgiarian screams asset flip. That isn't to say there wasn't effort put into crafting the game's dozen or so stages, but that it adds nothing to the default elements. The platforming structure is the same across all levels, with similar gaps, widths, and lengths. The enemies are few, but their reactions are all the same: They slide up to your character and wail away. Combat is a button mashing exercise to dispatch them, or you can just as easily ignore them and push onwards. There's no tutorial to tell you how to play the game, so your only clue is to check controls in the settings menu. Whether accidental oversight or intentional omission, it fails to communicate the most essential of features: wall jumping. In the second stage, there's a series of short p…

"Is it over yet?" I kept asking myself this as the levels dragged on and on. There's hardly any variety to the levels. There are 3 different enemies, except they aren't different at all and attack you the same by just coming up to you. A big slog. Can 100% the game without actually completing it, of which the latter takes around 40-45 minutes. PS. There is a wall jump, though this is shown in a more tutorial manner after it was necessary in a previous level where it was not very obvious.

Nostalgiarian is a basic template flip for a Unity 2D retro platformer. The "developers" just copied a basic game template from the Unity store, changed around a few things, and are selling it on Steam as a lazy cash grab. It's a basic retro 2D platformer, like many thousands on Steam. The game maps PC gaming peripherals (HOTAS, Pedals, Racing Wheels etc) as if they are console peasant children's toy gamepads. This makes the player move constantly in one direction and makes the game completely unplayable. There's no way to turn this off. The developer would have picked this up with basic testing on PC. They chose to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Resolution and controls are locked. These flaws push this game far below minimum acceptable standards for PC.

Well, it's just a boring and soulless game. Nostalgia is a great concept for a 2D platformer game. Yet, the developer uses this concept as sloppy as possible. The game reacts pretty late when you press the attack button. There is only one music, and it is on repeat. Just because you can make ‘game’, you don’t have to make a game. Pros (+): Nice graphics. Nice music. Achievements. Cons (-): Awful physic. The on-loop music. Soulless mobs.
