Nogalious is praised for its charming retro aesthetic, atmospheric music, and creative old-school level design with hidden secrets and surprises that reward exploration. However, players consistently complain about technical issues including buggy controls that can't be properly remapped, glitchy dialog boxes, cheap deaths from momentum not resetting between screens, hit detection problems with enemies, and the lack of a save feature that forces players to restart from the beginning—issues that undermine the game's potential and make it feel unpolished despite clear design effort.
Nogalious is a nice looking 8bit action platformer game. I wish I could love this game but it has some issues that hold it back but I think this game could be greatly improved with a patch - nothing is too wrong but things are slightly off on parts. For example, when fighting the first boss the way the enemies spawn feels wrong. Certain enemies seem like they can't be hit at times and other times they do feel like they can be hit, like with the birds or bats. One other major issue is the save feature - which does not exist. It can be very punishing and irritating if you die to odd game decisions or oversights and have to start over from the beginning again. I know many games have it so you have to continue from the beginning and that is a very old school mechanic in gaming, especially platformers, but the game needs to be a bit smoother and with less issues to work best with the no-saving. The platforming is alright but at times things feel a bit unresponsive or late to respond. Sometimes things look like platforms but aren't solid they are just the background. One other issue is when going between screens you can fall into an instant death trap because your movement continues a…7 found this helpful
This game seems to have a lot of heart put into it and some good ideas, but unfortunately none of that makes it good. The controls are clusmy with weird default, and the control setup screen was glitched and wouldn't let me set the left movement control. In fact, the game has a lot of glitches in it. Dialog windows leave as soon as they appear making them impossible to read, controls don't always work, you can get stuck in several spots, and there's a lot of cheap deaths caused by you character not stopping the momentum of his walk when it changes screens often causing you to walk right into pools of water for an instant death. The game has a lot of potential, but all the ptential in the world can't fix the game's sloppy execution. Long time since I've played a game with a lot of thought put into it like this one I was disappointed to find that each area plays out like an escape room so this isn't a Zelda II or Simon's Quest however, by it's own merit it, the template works well. However it takes a lot from the former as well as old arcade titles like Karnov which held interesting secrets if you like thoroughly exploring each area you are in; spoiler for one example would be a vine taking you into the clouds to get the key you need to go into the next area. If you stand there for a moment, after grabbing said key, a cloud passes by with boots floating on it that allows you to jump higher - not necessary but they do help It's old gimmicks like this that we enjoyed in NES and arcade titles during the late eighties which most developers have forgotten so Nogalious is a rare find. Nog also relies quite a bit on pattern-memorization; like the old days you only have so many continues before you have to start the current world over but this allows you to sniff around for secrets (like those jumping boots) each time around which you may not have found. One and only complaint / suggestion is that the developer a…1 found this helpful
Very fun game, it's a good 8-bit Retro style game. my only problem with it that it doesn't have a save feature but it encourages you to be more careful about how you traverse the area. https://youtu.be/raBNOn_KbHI1 found this helpful
Fun game with that look and fell of nostalgia.
This is an interesting 2D platformer - it merges some almost flash-game like aesthetics with a more NES / C64 look, and delivers some that's nice to look at and visually appealing. The music as well is very atmospheric and retro-style and one of my favourite parts of the entire experience. All that being said, there's one thing you gotta know going into this game. This game is hard. Like, really hard. It throws you right into the action and you need to learn quick or die. I made a video on it, and a guy in the comments compared it to Dragon's Lair on the NES, and it's a pretty apt comparison. If you're some one who enjoys challenging games - especially of the 2D platformer flavour, it's a good time overall, but be ready to die over and over when you first jump in. If you can break past the learning curve, there's a lot to enjoy here. *I also don't think the guy who made this game's first language is English, so some of the text is a bit strangely worded. Didn't affect gameplay for me at all but is worth noting.
