About Oaken

The world of Oaken is a mythical place, existing in a not easily defined space and time. It is stretched among the branches of the Great Oak. Its inhabitants are spirits which listen to the same voice, called the Oak Song. The loss of that voice starts a series of events leading into a struggle which may either heal or destroy the Great Oak.
  • Roguelite, hero-oriented campaign with deck management.
  • A mystical world inhabited by spirits with celtic and tribal vibes.
  • A randomly generated world map with tons of levels, bosses and events to be discovered.
  • Unique, highly tactical battles on a hexagonal grid, where position and rotation is everything.
  • Upgrade your spells and spirits the way you want.
  • Easy to learn, hard to master - chill and challenge modes suitable for any player.

✦ AI summary

Oaken is a visually stunning hex-grid tactics roguelike with deep mechanics and content, but it struggles with accessibility and replayability. Players consistently praise its gorgeous art direction and tactical gameplay depth, though many find it confusing to learn, with poor UI clarity and sluggish pacing that makes initial encounters feel unrewarding. The game seems to reward dedicated players willing to push through its learning curve, but lacks the immediate engagement and pick-up-and-play appeal of similar roguelikes.

I really want to recommend this, but unfortunately I just cannot, as the text is way too small and blurry, even with "High readability font" enabled. The issue persists both on 4K tv screen and on Steam Deck, which is extra unfortunate because the game is marked as Deck Verified, and the verification details explicitly specify that the text is supposed to be well-readable on deck. If I would have bought it directly I would have requested a refund, but I've got it through Humble Choice, so I just keep it in hopes that maybe one day developers would add options for different fonts or at least font size selector.

Seems like it was designed as a mobile game

I don't understand why this game has such bad reviews. Some reviews are so weird, comparing the game with Slay The Spire...? This makes no sense whatsoever. Both games have the concept of "cards" but they have nothing else in common. Your "deck" in this game is very small, and you move units on a hex grid. This game is much more similar to a tactics game like Into The Breach. Anyways, the graphical fidelity of this game is unbelievable. Surely one of the most beautiful roguelikes ever. I think this is a great game with of the type "tactics roguelike" that is definitely worth its price. It does not have as much replayability as other roguelikes, and you definitely need substantially more time to learn the mechanics, which are both sure downsides. And the difficulty is also substantially higher. I think a downside of the game is how more punishing it is for particular styles like melee, effectively disinsentivising deck styles.

Hurts the heart that this game has so little attention. It's pretty in-depth and has a lot of mechanics happening, upgrades, talents, plenty of trinkers, all that jazz you want in your deckbuilder/roguelite. Maybe a biiit lacking in UI polish and repetetive sound design, but it's still a game with quite a lot of content. But I gotta give a shout out to the artists (which there are like 10 of judging by the credits?!), the art's gorgeous..

This one really just didn't click for me right off the bat like many roguelikes do. It just doesn't feel that good on introduction into the game, and is both sluggish and confusing, and not the good kind of confusing. I will probably try it again someday.
