About Oxygen: First Breath

✦ AI summary

Build and manage a post-apocalyptic settlement dependent on a life-saving Oxygen Center while battling deadly environmental threats like toxic winds, droughts, and frosts. Lead your survivors through resource management, research, and exploration across a devastated world transformed by catastrophic volcanic activity.

STORY

A natural disaster hit us and brought humanity to the verge of extinction. Only a few survived because of "Large Igneous Provinces", these are volcanoes that don't explode but huge cracks open in the Earth's crust and lava just starts bubbling out, oozing across the landscape, releasing tons of toxic gases. The most dangerous thing about an igneous province is that it can keep up the oozing for centuries. With the wind effect, these gases spread all over the world and changed the atmospheric composition. One of these toxic magmatic gases reduced the oxygen level in the air. Sadly, there’s only little oxygen left in the world. Before it's too late for humanity, the Oxygen Center is invented. It generates oxygen by electrolysis of underground water, and the required electricity is generated by using coal but you should be slowly moving away from coal towards sustainable sources of energy. This is the only hope for us...

BUILD, MANAGE, and RESEARCH

The world has changed. Start a new civilization for all survivors around the globe. Fulfill your people's basic needs with a nice living place, steady water and food supplies. Research new features and buildings to increase their confidence and education level.

LEAD YOUR PEOPLE

Now it's your time, you’re the leader. Prove your worth as a leader to everyone! Coordinate and assign your people to different workplaces. Let them produce all required materials.

OVERCOME THE NATURAL CHALLENGES

Protect your people. Prepare for recurring and intense frosts and droughts, and plan ahead by stocking up water and food. Get ready for deadly winds, and generate the required energy by using coal or make your plan to move away from coal towards sustainable energy resources.

Oxygen: First Breath developed by Turquoise Revival Games and published by GrabTheGames and UpgradePoint presents itself as a prologue, but it carries enough mechanical weight to feel like a complete, if condensed, survival city-building experience. Set in a desolate future where breathable air has become a scarce and managed resource, the game wastes no time establishing its central tension: survival is not guaranteed, and every system you build exists to support a single fragile lifeline. From the outset, it distinguishes itself by framing growth not as expansion for its own sake, but as a calculated risk tied directly to whether your colony can sustain the oxygen it depends on. The gameplay revolves around constructing and maintaining a settlement centered on an oxygen-producing core, which functions as both the heart of the colony and its greatest vulnerability. Every building you place, every worker you assign, and every resource you gather feeds into a tightly interconnected system where imbalance can quickly spiral into collapse. Food, water, energy, and population are not just parallel concerns but interdependent pressures that must be managed simultaneously. This creates …

Too much micro. Shifting people between jobs depending on the weather gets too tedious over time. Played on normal. Pace at start of game is I suppose a good tutorial but it's super slow and linear. Playing on fastest speed and still feels like waiting. Letting game run on fastest when bad conditions hits can totally smoke your settlement in a very short time. Sickness is crazy. I had 19 people and 1 medical post <20 days in, everyone started having low oxygen in a wind storm and all but 6 died. happened super fast... within 30 seconds on fastest game speed. After that, my game really felt hosed. I didn't have enough people to finish tasks and I had too many buildings with not enough people to run them. I got a second wave of sickness... which pretty much left entire population either a patient or a nurse. I then ran very low on food. I got back up to 12 people but I'm basically out of food. On one hand, being in a state of near extinction is somewhat engaging but on the other hand I'm just waiting on fastest trying to get food production back up. Not really sure if grinding away to recover on this save is worth it.

Nice base building / survival game. The tutorial is short and could perhaps be more in depth, especially as to the hazards that are approaching and theyre potentially catastrophic impact on your community. Great work has also been put into quality of life aspects to this game, so it was always easy to navigate and place roads, objects etc etc I enjoyed the trial and would definitely purchase the full game, for a reasonable price. Looking forward to it.

a little too passive for me

A very challenging, yet rewarding game. Unlike most citybuilding-type games, you can't just set it and forget it. You have to constantly think how to marshal all your assets (people/workers, resources, defending against cracks in the Earth, structures, etc.). I found the only way to succeed was to focus on maximizing the efficiency and output of all aspects of the game at all times. Thus, you have to pay attention and keep adjusting, your resource usage constantly to deal with the current situation (and the situations can change A LOT). An extremely engaging game. If you like strategic citybuilders I think you'll love this one. If that's you, then I would strongly recommend this game!
