About Papo & Yo
Quico’s best friend, Monster, is a huge beast with razor-sharp teeth, but that doesn’t scare Quico away from playing with him. That said, Monster does have a very dangerous problem: an addiction to poisonous frogs. The minute he sees one hop by, he’ll scarf it down and fly into a violent, frog-induced rage where no one, including Quico, is safe. And yet, Quico loves his Monster and wants to save him.
As Quico, players will build their friendship with Monster by solving puzzles together and adventuring through a magical, surrealist world. Players will need to learn to use Monster’s emotions, both good and bad, to their advantage if they want to complete their search for a cure and save their pal.

some of the puzzle mechanics are neat but the monster sections are trash, didn't bother finishing it. no dying as such but fail states and annoyances aplenty. so as a game it already fails in the gameplay department, but the handling/presentation of an otherwise serious topic is disappointing too. typical artsy style over substance stuff.2 found this helpful

good-looking game with an incredible soundtrack and puzzles with gimmicks that aren't super complicated, but really fun. i've always liked the writing and how the story is told through gameplay, the main message is so well delivered it makes you feel as if you were experiencing it yourself. also extremely nostalgic, been a fan of this game since launch ❤️1 found this helpful
Ever since I played the demo of Papo & Yo on my PS3 when I was around 7 years old, I never understood the true significance this game has to another person. Easily has become one of my favorite games of all time and I am astonished of the experience I had.

Papo & Yo is a short but memorable puzzle-platformer that uses its surreal favela setting and the relationship between Quico and Monster to tell an unflinching autobiographical story about growing up with an alcoholic parent — the kind of narrative that sneaks up on you and hits harder than you expect. The chalk-drawn environmental puzzles and impossibly shifting architecture have a genuine childlike wonder to them, and watching Monster transform from a loveable companion into something terrifying when he eats those poisonous frogs is the kind of gameplay-as-metaphor that few games pull off this effectively. The puzzles are on the easier side and the game is only about 3-4 hours long, but it never overstays its welcome, and the ending left me sitting quietly for a moment before I could move on. If you've ever loved someone struggling with addiction and felt powerless to help, this one will resonate deeply — I'd call it less a game and more a piece of interactive therapy. Highly recommended, especially on sale.
