About Personal Space

Escape the clutches of friendship and social expectations in this top-down puzzler about living with social anxiety. Go to social gatherings and try to complete your obligations before you get too stressed. If your anxiety gets too high it's game over.

The purpose of Personal Space is to create the experience of social anxiety for any player that interacts with the game. We wanted to make this game because it opens up a really important conversation about social anxiety, how it affects us, and why we need to talk about it. We think it's important that, even if you're not someone prone to social anxiety yourself, you can empathize with the experience and with other people who may feel social anxiety in their daily lives. We want this to be a game that fosters a sense of community. It’s about understanding that even if you experience social anxiety you’re not alone. A lot of us are anxious, and in that we can find community.

Who is Pastel Peaks Production?
We are a team of students from the University of Utah's Entertainment Arts and Engineering Program. This game was created as part of a Senior Capstone Project over the course of the 2019-2020 academic year.

that was amazing. it felt just like real life. i ignored my phone. turned on my objective marker. bounced from friend to drinks to friend weaving through suffocating crowds of d bags waiting for the darkest moment to assert my presence, remind myself i have a happy place to go to, or just run like hell the first 5 seconds stressed me out, seeing those globs of tofu get all red and start to surround me. then i noticed i was blue and that everythings a game and it took me back to high school when i saw everyone in the hallways as just some thing to dodge. on the street and at work. obstacles and spatial challenges. video games are always paying off the cooldown places, the pockets of air, are so natural. it was getting really dense at the office party and up in the corner i saw a room with a sofa. i have gaming instincts like where a fully cooked turkey might be hiding in a dungeon wall but ive never felt one of my real life senses go off about how comfy and relaxing a couch would be right now and when i got there the game had the same thought wrapping me in a huge blue circle this is why video games are the most important thing we have ever created. aside from in real life where …

It's cute. I like simple games, and this was pretty simple.

"Personal Space" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. It's from University of Utah in the USA. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. The students decided they could get a passing grade by hamfistedly tackling the somewhat serious issue of social anxiety with a poorly done student homework demo. Very constructive. This game is basically a top down action avoidance game but instead of stealthing around sight cones, you're avoiding going near too many people. Social anxiety is a serious issue that some peop…
