Pigment

nice!

Pigment is a really nice little platformer with a simple idea that I think works surprisingly well. I play as Huey in a world where all of the colour has disappeared, and my job is to find out what happened and bring it back. The whole game is hand drawn, so watching the world slowly become colourful again as I move through it gives the adventure a nice sense of progress. It is a small game, but it has a clear identity from the moment I start playing. The movement is the part I enjoyed most. I can run, jump, dash, swipe and pogo around the level, and the game puts a big focus on staying in the air. As I collect new movement abilities, I can chain jumps and dashes together to reach areas that were impossible to get to earlier. I like this because movement gradually becomes more satisfying rather than simply giving me another ability that I barely need. Once I start getting the timing right, moving around the level feels pretty smooth. I also really like the way colour is used as part of the experience. The world starts off looking mostly empty and dull, but moving through it restores colour to the hand drawn environments. That gives me a reason to actually pay attention to where I…

I actually love this a lot! My only complaint is that I want MORE! The characters are cute, and the game itself is really short at only 15 minutes. Uh, that's how long it took for me to beat it anyway. I found the platforming to be really fun, and I didn't struggle much at all. The boss original soundtrack was a bit subpar, but y'know what? For an indiedev, this project is already really impressive! I wish that after we win the game, we'd have an option to view the artwork in full color. The tutorials are also show don't tell, with the control of the character being taken over and demonstrating your abilities. Really fun!

A 15 minutes game. Controls are snappy, the skill progression is really fast (every 3 minutes or so). In normal difficulty, the game is very forgiving, because you can collect your health back. That's how I did beat the final boos. With the full upgrade, you have full freedom of movement. Can easily be made into a full game (I mean longer) with more upgrades. Maybe in a metroidvania style and extra collectibles. Coloring the background is nice and it can open new game mode if programmer desired: less paint, where you try to let the canvas as white as possible and full paint, where you have to paint the whole canvas (with some alteration of level design in that mode and time constraint to force routing).
