Pinball Spire promises a pinball take on a metroidvania. With hope in my heart I dived right in but didn't quite find what I initially hoped for. What I did find was charm, atmosphere and a good amount of fun - a game that was worth it's price of entry (just over £6 for me thanks to the summer sale).
The first thing you need to know
First thing's first: For you to properly enjoy this game for what it is, you need to know what it ISN'T. This isn't a pinball metroidvania. Don't expect it to be. There's a handful of powers you collect throughout the game, only two of which are used to access new areas or routes and the game is constructed in a very linear fashion. You won't be exploring new tables to find hidden passages. You won't have epic boss battles until the very end of the game. The only backtracking you need to do is forced on you, rather than something you would do by choice. This is not 'Pinball FX meets Symphony of the Night' but, in fairness to the developers, it has the beginnings of the elements that it would need to become such a thing.
Why this doesn't matter at all
What is here is well worth the time of any casual pin-head looking for somethi…

Fun pinball game, though it's definitely on the short side. Really good for listening to podcasts, too. Looking forward to the sequel.

Well that was a...game. If you think it looks good. There are far worse things to spend your money on. However its VERY short and has a padded section that feels like its only there so people can't beat it and refund it. Harmless and fun, but could've been a lot more.

Fun metroidvania pinball mix. Quite short though

Short but sweet and left me wanting more! The only negative i noticed is that one of the starting tracks repeats in an awkward spot.

Calling this a -vania game is really stretching the definitions of what you'd find in the genre. You "do" get abilities and you "do" get more traversal, but there's not really much exploration at play here; the game is largely linear, with some of the areas requiring you to take a detour, before returning to the main table to remover the blocker that prevented you from progressing. Game is fine by most marks and measures and otherwise does what it looks like it ought to do. I wish there was secret areas or other things tied to harder shots/sequences. I think I'd end on the side of not recommending this game though. Nothing is particularly offensive, but I found the whole experience was meh.
