I really wanted to like this game, it sounded really cool from the reviews and the description, but it fell a bit short for me. A lot of people comparing this game to Mina the Hallower, but where that game had very thoughtful, challenging and intricate design this game had bland and uninspired gameplay, coupled with relatively amateurish pixel art and a way too busy overworld design. Maybe if I'd stuck with it a bit longer it would have opened up some more interesting gameplay options and challenging bosses, but the yoyo combat felt samey and boring for quite a while. I probably could've lived with all of that and stuck with it if the character designs and story grabbed me at all, but unfortunately they really didn't. I wouldn't recommend slugging through the early stages of this one, there are too many other more engaging games and stories out there to experience in your spare time instead,

Pipistrello nails the feel of classic SNES and GBA games, it's true, but the special sauce of it is in the yoyo abilities you collect that allow you to fully explore its secrets. The game does a fantastic job teaching the player the basics of each move, and stringing (no pun intended) them all together to grab a previously out-of-reach upgrade feels great. Just solidly fun from beginning to end. Really enjoyed my time with it.

Giving this game a positive review so more people can find out about it. It is a hidden gem with very little information available online, so if you get stuck, you're kind of screwed. That's not the game's fault, although there are some particularly frustrating sections, especially near the end, Loved the upgrade system, movement system is great, and bosses were all fair (hardest took me 3 tries). The metroidvania aspect is less about your upgrades unlocking new biomes, rather just new puzzles. The game is fairly linear, but with a ton of side content and overworld puzzles. 7.5/10
