Penny’s Big Breakaway

after finishing it a second time it's still one of my favorite platformers ever put out. this game's swag is unmatched and doesn't fall into what i've heard others refer to as "movement slop" thanks to the genuine skill it takes to master. the biggest complaint i can give is that it is a little janky at times, you'll no doubt run into something worthy of a head scratch during your playthrough. but all in all, it's one of the finest modern platformers we've seen yet, and i highly recommend it.

This game is like a potential man situation. I really think it has some crazy promise and ideas however the execution can feel very lacking. However I could also just be bad and not great and getting lots of speed with Penny. Either way I think a sequel to this game would be awesome to hone in on the mechanics and level designs. Even right now the game is pretty fun and has a banger soundtrack.

It's such a pretty game with such a good soundtrack. My biggest gripe with it is the controls. It always felt a little odd, even after picking up a controller to play the game with. 6/10

I can recommend the game, but with a big caveat. It has been mentioned how the PC port is a mess, and it is. I actually could not play the game on a Windows PC. It kept crashing. But funny enough, on linux/steam deck, I had 0 issues. So, either get it on a Console, or if you are on linux/have a steam deck. This is an extremely charming and fun 3D Platformer, playing normally and methodically through the levels will net you results, but nothing special. Its when you try to use the mechanics of the game to do stuff as fast as possible and without losing your combos, when it gets extremely fun (and challenging!). A fun game to play once with charming music and nostalgic graphics. And if you enjoy the gameplay and like to improve yourself, a game that rewards you getting good.

Penny's Big Breakaway is a fantastic 3D platformer. Once the movement clicks, the game is so satisfying. The level designs are fantastic, and it feels like the game keeps throwing new obstacles at you throughout your playtime, all the way until the last levels, where it tests you on everything you learned. The music and art direction are fantastic too. Synthy and diverse, and the whole thing feels like a game right out of 1998 in the best way. The camera is fixed, kind of like Mario Galaxy, but that really isn't an issue. If anything, it really helps keep you focused on the action. Honestly, the only real complaints I have are the collision issues and the bosses. If you get enough speed, sometimes you can clip through solid objects and be forced to restart from a checkpoint. The bosses are also a rough spot. Most are too easy, or they take place in way too cramped arenas, and almost none of them really test you on the skills you learned in the last few levels. All in all, this is probably the best 3D platformer on Steam, and I seriously recommend it.

Lovely game with excellent music. Penny's moveset is a lot of fun and the devs do a lot of creative things with it but nothing overstays it's welcome. There's clearly another level of skill to this game if you want all the score-gated postcards, but I am not that audience. The only negatives I can think of are the various collision bugs I experienced, with Penny or Yo-Yo clipping through the map a number of times. There are also some moving platforms that it seems you can just fall straight through, don't know what causes that. Not a huge deal, the game is pretty forgiving. I would recommend this game, but I will note that I got it on sale.
